Upgrading my home network to Gigabit, Switch ?

Out of interest, what hardware is behind that setup on both ends (disk spec/ raid or not etc) ?.

If I have been running a machine on torrent duty for a few days then my transfers slow to around 50-60MB/s. Once the switch is reset then they raise to 70-80MB/s. The switch is a midrange (G-series) Netgear switch. I believe most home switches will have the same issues. Hopefully my HP Procurve 1810 will have a big enough address space to avoid this issue although my new network plan is routing the torrent box away from the main switch for a direct internet route.

iperf (the tool I was using to test network bandwidth) doesn't involve the Hard Disk or any particular file sharing protocol when benchmarking, It's purely for testing your network setup.
My Windows File Transfers (2* SSD's RAID0 -> 8* Samsung F1 Hardware RAID5) Do reflect my iperf findings, I get just under 100MB/s. on large transfers.

Interesting, thanks.

I have either 2*WD black (raid 0) to 4*WD Green (raid5 - one drive is in RMA as there would usually be 5) and get between 50->65MB/s. Using the 2*SSD (vertex II raid 0) I get slightly higher speeds 75-65MB/s

The raid5 is currently software based until my PERC6 cables arrive but I suspect I am limited by the WD greens. Not a massive issue as it is only for a multi-stream NAS box.

Spot on :)
OCZ Vertex 2E 120GB 2.5" SATA-II Solid State Hard Drive (OCZSSD2-2VTXE120G)

I am struggling to see how this fits in with your network. You must be like me and don't like shopping baskets that are only partially filled:D

Thanks for the topic though, I was about to post the exact same question about this scenario.

Update

I got all my kit Saturday and i have now got my Gigabit network all up and running and I'm chuffed :)

First thing i did was to flash the Router with the latest firmware, I just used the latest TP FW and it works great. I transferred a 1GB file from my Revo/Nas to my Rig (sig) at 114mbs. Before the upgrade i was getting about 12mbs :D

jbs - Felt guilty only spending £70 so i thought I'd chuck in a £190 SSD!!! ;)

The SSD was part of my upgrade to my main rig along with a GTX 580 (even bought a 60GB SSD for the REVO). It's gonna be bread and water for the next 6 months :(
