Hey there,

I used to know most things about computer hardware, but it's been a few years since i've properly looked in to it, so i'm out the loop as far as new hardware is concerned.

However my graphics card has been acting up lately so i figure it's time to upgrade,

at the moment i'm gonna upgrade the motherboard, graphics card and case
i have a 5% off voucher with overclockers too, but i have to use it by monday ><

my current rig is this:

x 1 - XFX ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2 2GB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
x 1 - Intel Core i7 920 D0 Stepping (SLBEJ) 2.66Ghz (Nehalem) (Socket LGA1366) - Retail + World In Conflict PC Game
x 1 - Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5 Intel X58 (Socket 1366) PCI-Express DDR3 Motherboard
x 1 - Hiper M1000 Power 1000w Power Supply
x 1 - Noctua NH-U12P SE1366 CPU Cooler (Socket LGA1366)
x 1 - Antec 300 Three Hundred Ultimate Gaming Case - Black (No PSU)
x 1 - Corsair 12GB (3x4GB) DDR3 2000MHz Unbuffered, 9-10-9-27, XMS3 with Classic Heat Spreader,
x 2 - Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 500GB SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM
x 1 - Crucial 64GB Real SSD C300 2.5" - SATA 6Gb/s Interface - Read 355MB/s Write 75MB/s

at the moment, i'm thinking for the case:

for the graphics card, i want to spend about £250,
but i really don't know what's considered good these days, i've seen the 6870 and 6950, and the 560/570
no idea though as to which i should go for

and with motherboard, i guess about £150 max budget with that?

thanks for your time guys, it's really appreciated

i would keep the core components, CPU/MB/RAM.
no need to upgrade as its still a capable setup.
definitely upgrade the GPU to something like the HD6950 or GTX570.
depending on the age of the PSU, i would also recommend swapping it as johnnyGuru stated that the capacitors used in the unit were cheap.

embarrassingly...
i don't know if it's the mobo or graphics card that's causing the problem, but it seems to be graphics card judging by the bsods

i might leave the psu for now, as mine seems to be going ok i think

also a quick question, someone said a while ago, that the motherboard i use now, will limit my ssd speed (i know it's not a big issue) but is it true :P

thanks again, take care

hmms, the reason i wanted the case, is because it's a full tower, so i'm thinking more space and less heat?

so does the psu really need replacing?

Hyper.....

OCZ Z-Series 850W '80 Plus Gold' Modular Power Supply
