Hi, just been gifted a desktop by a now good friend. Play some steam games FPS and the like (not worried about super stunning graphics), and I'd like the whole thing to run a bit better.

System looks like
Windows 8.1 64 Bit
ASUSTeK Computer INC. M2N68-VM (AM2)
AMD Phenom II X4 955#
8.00GBDDR2
512MB ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series (ATI AIB)

Don't want to spend loads (maybe a couple hundred if it's worth it)

Is there much point in trying to upgrade anything here? It sort of works if I put graphics options down super low.

Cheers

Thanks so far!

The current PSU is a Cooler Master Silent Pro M600

No idea if that's worth keeping. Do I need to upgrade that before thinking about fitting a new GPU?

yes overclocking and a new gpu and psu would help, but its just false economy.
just pile your monies into a new intel machine and sell the mesh one on gumtree.

This seems like the most honest response, but I can't afford a new rig unless there's some super cheap build which wouldn't break the bank...

Wow - I'll get saving!

There's so many options - wasn't quite aware that for basically double a GPU I could build a half-decent system (with cannibal parts).

This place is amazing.

Perhaps a basic question follows.

I'm going to go for a 950 or a 750ti. Is there much to choose between them?

Also, why are there so many brands of the same card...?

You're right was a little sparse on the old information.

The monitor I have looks lovely @ 1080p - albeit with the graphics options down quite a way. I need the higher resolution for workspace as I make music with the thing as well (nice to have more space on the desktop).

Games I play - in the last month, Insurgency, Chivalry, Planetary Annihilation, Rocket League. All run fine, just fed up of looking at low end graphics. I love racing games but haven't been able to bring myself to play any on this machine yet, simply because I know they'll look so poor.

Right all, thanks for the advice.

Started a mini war re old vs new gpus.

I'll probably upgrade the rest of the system at some point but really at the moment thats not financially viable. Maybe after Christmas.

How much of a future can I expect from a 370? Is it worth just going for the 380 for a couple of months so that I can bring everything up the standard (mobo cpu etc) and have something a little better?

I hate it when mum and dad fight like this.

Seriously though - I'm really stuck as to what to do. In a years time, I will definitely be able to afford a proper system, and I'll swing by here for someone to help me drop a grand with the rights parts and stuff.

For now I'm going to go with a cheap enough option so that I don't have to cry next time I look at my bank balance.

Thanks for the help from everyone, although there is some difference in advice, it has helped a great deal. Cheers
