Hey guys! This is my first post here, so I'll try and give you as many details as possible to help with my situation.

Basically I have a rig which I purchased from Overclockers a few years back. To save me writing out all the current details of it, I've produced a CPU-Z report which can be accessed online here

The only modification I've done on the rig since buying it was increasing the ram to 16GB. Doing this, obviously removed the factory overclock, for which I managed to get some back by using the TurboV program that came with my computer.

Lately my computer has been getting increasingly slow, and after purchasing a laptop with an SSD I figured that'd be a great, simple, way to dramatically increase the performance.

My plan is to get an SSD, install Windows 8.1 on it (I happen to like windows 8...), wipe my current hard drive clean for storage, and hopefully re-overclock my pc again properly.

Though not being 100% up with the times, and not having to do any task like this often, I naturally have some questions.

-------------------------------------------------------

Firstly I need some advice with my shopping list. I've been looking around at SSD's, and I don't really have the money to spend any more than £100 on one (Student right here ). I quite like the look of some of the Samsung ones? This one in particular: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-167-SA

I also realised I'm going to be needing one of these: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-002-OP to hold it in my case?

Am I missing anything else on this behalf? Obviously I'll be purchasing a copy of Windows 8.1 to install on it.

-------------------------------------------------------

Secondly what’s the best way to completely wipe my current drive? Would it just be the normal format drive option from bios?

What would be the best time to do this as well - before connecting my SSD or after?

-------------------------------------------------------

From watching a few videos about SSD's, I've seen that once I've added my SSD, I need to go into the bios and change the SATA controller to operate in AHCI mode? Is there anything else I should change in my bios?

-------------------------------------------------------

Whilst I'm inside my PC, I think I need to find a way in cleaning out some of the dust. Now what is the best way to do this? I've heard so many things that people do, and to me they all sound really risky!

Some say to use the compressed air; however I find this always leaks some liquid? I had some people say to use a paintbrush, but surely this generates enough static to blow up everything? Lol.

-------------------------------------------------------

Last but not least, we move on to overclocking. Now I know this is quite a big topic, and I'm not looking to push my CPU to the VERY limits. I just want it to a decent enough status that will help bring back some more of the speed it had when I first received it.

What's the best way in going about performing an overclock on my system? In more simple terms if possible, as I've never performed a proper overclock before.

-------------------------------------------------------

I appreciate I'm asking for a lot here, but I've never done any of the above before, and I seem to get so many conflicting things told to me/found on the internet. Also, a lot of the time it seems to be hardware dependant.

Any help would be fantastic, even if people could point me into the right direction with links that'd be great.

Thank you so much for reading this (slightly long winded) post. :)

- Martin

YOUR BASKET

When you have enabled ACHI mode, make sure you`re hdd is disconnected before installing your OS. Once your OS is installed, just delete your hdd partition(s) in disk management.

Ah fantastic! Interesting to see you've actually recommended a cheaper product to the one I was looking at. :D

What made you suggest that over the Samsung?

Also thanks a load for the videos! The first one seems spot on.

So now I just need to know about cleaning the inside of my pc.

Also, just to clarify your point about clearing the old hdd:

- Remove current drive
- Connect new drive
- Change to ACHI mode in bios
- Insert Windows 8.1 CD, follow installation screens
- Perform updates, install all my motherboard drivers & gfx card drivers?
- Power down, connect old HDD (Do I still need to make sure old hdd is in slave mode?)
- In bios format hdd? or is it done in My Computer?

Once again, thanks for all your help and recomendations :)

I'm guessing he recommended it because it's cheaper? :D Probably not much in terms of performance difference either

:p Well, yeah. I just wondered if he had experience with Toshiba being more reliable or something. Tbh, I was actually expecting people to suggest things well out of my budget. Makes a nice change I suppose. Hehe.

After you have installed OS and drivers, reconnect hdd and go back into windows. Then open Disk Management, select hdd and reformat, job done.
As far as the Toshiba drive goes, yes it is cheaper, but I doubt you would notice any difference in day to day use.
I just use a small paint/artist brush for cleaning out my PC. It`s also good for cleaning all your fans, if you don`t want to have to remove them.

Oh, easier than I thought it would be! hehe

I probably should have mentioned, I'm at uni studying Computer Games Arts, so I'll be using a lot of demanding programs such as the Autodesk suit, Photoshop, Unity3D, and ZBrush. Think this will make much difference?

So paintbrushes are ok? No way? hah. I take it a nice soft bristle one?

If I were you, I would have a read through some ssd benchmark comparisons and see which ssd`s perform best for the applications you will be using.

And yes, a soft brush. :)

Dude you're amazing. I now feel confident enough to order and get this ball rolling. I've been backing up my crap all evening to save a bit of time there :p haha.

Looking at the ssd's I think your right. Until you start spending a lot more, there isn't a hell of a lot of difference!

Thanks again :)

One last question - a SATA-II Cable is pretty much the same as a SATA-III cable right? I think in one of the videos I watched they said that the only difference was that they added the fancy right-angle connection and some clips?

Yep, basically all they did to update them was check that the Sata 2 cables could cope with the bandwidth (which they could) and the clips etc

Sweet. All ordered. Thought i'd treat myself to a new keyboard whilst I was at it. hehe. Had to change out the adapter you recommended however as there were none in stock. Nevermind, I don't mind a couple of quid for the little things :P

Thank you so much for all your help and I'll let you know how it goes. :)

The SSD you went for?

You should not use a regular brush to clean your computer as regular brushes can generate static electricity. There are however anti static brushes you can buy. Personally I would just use air-can to blow the dust away.

If you really want to clean your computer, it's best to strip it down and place metal / plastic parts in water (I put my cases under hot shower!). Then use an air-can / air-compressor on the PCB's once they are separated.

Ok, I got all the parts and put it all together. Just about to sort out the secondary HDD.

Had some issues getting it up and running. Asus don't provide windows 8 drivers for my motherboard. >.< However wazza300 suggested i let windows 8 find and install the drivers for me. Which worked! :D (http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18580425)

I've carried out all the windows 8.1 updates, and installed my gfx drivers. Everything seems pretty stable so far.

I ended up cleaning my pc with a soft artist paintbrush as suggested by idleman, and that worked a treat. I can actually see my gfx card now! hehe.

Once my secondary hdd is setup and formatted, i'll be moving onto overclocking, I just have one question about my ram settings. The guy in the first video (suggested by idleman), brushes over it quite quickly without really explaining what he's doing. I'm just wondering should I follow every step he does exactly? Or should I ignore the changes he does to his ram?

Cheers guys!

Hmm, I just followed that video. Didn't seem to work. After clicking save and close, it tries to load Asus Express Gate, but then freezes (I waited a good 20 minutes).

After resetting the PC it just comes up with the message "Overclocking failed".

I didn't jump too much on the voltage either. I started at 1.23.
