I bought a new copy of kaspersky for the pc in Dec but i'm upgrading my PC with a new build tomorrow. Will i need to buy a new license or is my license held just for that one PC i.e. locked to that PC?

OP: if it's an OEM version then technically it's linked to the board you had when you installed it. if it's retail version, then you can move it without breaking the terms of the licence. pretty much what came back from Kaspersky themselves when i asked the question a while ago too.

Much the same as the usual questions that pop up regarding Vista, XP etc and their OEM/retail licence differences.

If it's a 3-license and you have an unactivated account just install it and use online activation. Note that the clock started ticking for the unused licences 1 month after the first activation for any of them (so if you activated copy (1) 6 months ago, then you'll only get 7 months on a new install) I've got 2x 3-licence versions and I remember reading that.

your thinking of windows.

with Kaspersky if u buy the oem 3 user license version u can install it on 3 separate pc's / motherboards. see the links above..

I used all three licenses with the PC and 2 laptops so i have none spare. I'll install on my new hardrive and see what happens. Hopefully they will let me get away with it but if not i'll have to buy a new license, if its a tenner then no harm done just a little annoying.

Maybe if you uninstall it then the records on their server will be updated to allow it to be reinstalled. Never tried it, but possible.

I read the links. They're all OEM and not retail, so valid for the initial system they're installed on only.

I'm not thinking of Windows, I thinking of what I was told in a support request response I got back from Kaspersky. As far as I'm aware, from what Kaspersky support said, an OEM installation is valid for the system installed on.... much the same as it is with Windows and most OEM software if I'm not mistaken.

If the OP has a retail copy or retail download, then he's fine and transferring it to another machine isn't an issue. If the OP's bought a 3 user OEM copy and has used only 1 of the 3 user activations, then that 1 user activation is tied to the system it was installed on. Moving to another mobo and using the key again effectively means 1 of the remaining 2 activations is then used up.

It might activate but it'll be 1 more of the 3 used up.

that why i asked is it a 1 user license or 3 user license. if it's an 3 user license and if he didn't use his other 2 licenses, he could have used 1 of them.. i didn't say he could move it.

I cant link to the actual site i bought it from but this is the description from the seller:

Kaspersky Internet Security 2009, 3-Desktop, 1 year Subscription (PC) £17.99

Now the retailer has both this version and an oem version so i'm guessing this is the full retail version. Now if it is a retail version i can just install and enter the code i already have and from there it should work as long as i dont ever load up the old drive with version?
