Upgrading PC2-4200 533Mhz memory?

At the moment I've got 4 sticks of PC2-4200 533Mhz 512mb in my AMD 3500+ (2.2Ghz).

The specs of my motherboard say it only supports PC-4200 (533Mhz) and PC2-5300 (667 Mhz).

Is it that this spec of the mobo is only of what was available at the time of manufacture, and would I be able to put in some of this instead (fantastic price...):

GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC2-6400C4 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GX22GB6400UDC)

Cheers in advance.

The specs of your motherboard would state them speeds because they are assuming you are not overclocking. i.e. they are the defualt bus speeds for 1066MHz and 1333 MHZ effective FSB CPUs whci require RAM to run at 533MHz and 677MHz respectively.

However, you should befine running PC6400. What mobo is is?

Give this a read..

Thanks.

My mobo is an A8M2N-LA (NodusM) - in a Compaq SR1909Uk (no competitors please special no less :)

I've read somewhere that these can't be overclocked though.

Would I notice a speed improvement anyway, by just sticking the new ram in?

Thought not. :)

I'm probably doing the "make my system faster for the least amount of effort and money" dance at the moment.

Whereas I should really be getting a better mobo and processor first.

Cheers - was just looking at the very thing!

Although for a processor I might spend a bit more and get a;

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 6000+ 3.00GHz (Socket AM2) - OEM
£76.99

Well it's 90 inc VAT for the X2 6000+ OEM, plus you'd need to buy a cooler for it.

Well the X2 6000+ OEM and an Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro would come in at ~£105 plus p&p and would be a very good upgrade for ~£100.

So an X2 4200+ for ~£50 or an X2 6000+ OEM and cooler for ~£105 would be sensible upgrades, depending on how much you want to spend.
