My friend just changed from XP to W7 and on installation of her old Pro Tools LE disc, it says it needs XP to install. I believe her disc came with the piece of Pro Tools hardware she has. There's a long number on the disc envelope, presumably the number she needs to verify authentication on installation. Will she be able to upgrade the software to work with W7 for free using that number, or do we have to assume it'll cost (a lot)? I'm guessing the latter.

Drop them an email maybe?

Have you tried running the installer in XP Compatibiilty mode?
If not XP mode might be an option

That's a good idea, I forgot about compatibility mode. I'll give her a call and run her through it.

If this is fairly old hardware and software you'll probably find there will be issues not just with Pro Tools LE but also with a potential lack of driver for the device. The audio systems in Windows were completely re-written in Vista so it's probably unlikely compatibility mode will work.

XP Mode would probably work if she has 7 Professional or above.

Not sure if this is the software you're talking about but minimum supported versions are listed here. Unfortunately it does look like paid updates!

Thanks for the link. She's got 7 Premium 32 bit installed.
