Guys,

I'm currently breaking a laptop up for spares, the Motherboard is gone. I just had a thought that why don't I replace my 40Gb hard drive with the laptops 80Gb Sata drive.

Currently the hard drive is formatted as NTFS, do I need to format as FAT32 first, also do I need to use the backup and restore feature? Can I just put the hard drive in and start from scratch? Most of the guides give me a new hard drive situation.

Cheers

Now I'm worried.

I tried the other hard drive, it came up with please attach the controller and push the PS button so I did then it came up with...

No applicable update data was found.
Insert storage media that contains the update data of version 2.43 or later and then press START and SELECT buttons at the same time

So I decided to take out the hard drive and replace with the original....

Now it says exactly the same thing?! Help!

I have seen this message before when I inserted a brand new HDD into a brand new PS3 without booting it up from the factory original. I just thought it was a consequence of having a new disk on first boot but as you have already been using yours, I don't know why you got that.

Hard to tell what you have done from your posts? The PS3 has it's own file system which it makes you format any new drives to that you insert. You can then restore date (had you taken backup using the built in utility while your smaller HDD was inserted).

At a guess I would say download the firmware form the sony site and stick it on a USB stick like:

http://uk.playstation.com/help-support/ps3/system-software/updates/ <--procedure
http://uk.playstation.com/help-support/ps3/system-software/download/ <-- files.

Edit: Ignore, I guess.

I had the same problem as that with mine, just had to load up the firmware on a memory stick to sort it

Cheers guys, will try this tommrow.

The hard drive I'm upgrading is a 80Gb sata, its currently formatted as NTFS and is blank. I thought I could put it in and the PS3 would format it for me but came up with that error.

Is it ok to upgrade to a 7200prm laptop drive?

There are mixed reactions on the net to this.

a lot of people say they have done it no problems, some people stay away from it due to the 7200rpms produce more heat. Performance wise, from what I've seen there isnt much in it, the 7200rpm drives are a little quicker.

Didn't get any gripes except needing 2.30 or higher to see my 200GB 7200 Seagate.
