I've got an original Fat 60GB (upgraded to 250GB) PS3 and since joining PSN+ I've filled my current 250GB HD with free games etc. So i went and bought a 1TB :D

What's the best and quickest way of transferring all the data to the new 1TB HD? is it possible to do a drive copy in Windows or do I have to do the process on the PS3, also would it be quicker / better to copy save data and download all the games again or use and external hard drive to backup 250GB and transfer it to the 1TB once it's installed in to the PS3?

Help!!!

You can't copy the hard drives in Windows. You'll need to use the backup utility on the PS3 to backup the current hard drive to a separate external drive, once done put in your new drive and restore the backup to it.

It may actually be quicker to take a copy of your saves and then just re-download your games after putting the new hard drive in.

You would think it would be quicker! even though I have connection 100MB and often see speeds of 120MB It's Virginmedia and for some reason or other I can't get above 20MB :(

took me 6 hours to transfer the stuff off my 160gb hd to usb drive and then back onto my ps3 with its newly installed 250gb drive that i had took out of an xbox 360s.

i removed a few games thinking it would be quicker to just re-download them when my PS3 was up and running again. wish't i'd left well alone and just copied all the stuff over.

regarding saves, i was told that if they are protected they will not work if you just copy them from hd to hd. you have to use the backup drive option on PS3 or upload your saves to the cloud if you have PS+. i did the later.

Thanks for that, I can live with those speeds :) thinking it's going to take me roughly 2 x 5 hours backing up games. It took me about 20 hours to download a 16GB game (think it was infamous 2)

I'll start the process tomorrow after work :)

it took me 8+ hours downloading/installing InFamous 2, but in a couple of parts.
i started downloading that along with LBP2, Saints 2 etc and realised my drive would not take them all, swapped drives doing the backup method and InFamous 2 (at 80% download) continued downloading the other 20% onto the new drive.

InFamous 2 then took a further 10mins downloading updates. with LBP 2 it took around 3 hours to download and install, when i went to play it.... up popped the message update 1.5 is available, another 45mins and 8 updates later and the game was ready to play.

i was told that a reason for the very long installs was due to me also downloading other stuff at the same time..

Successfully upgraded :)

Synced Trophies
Backed up data to external USB hard Drive (5.30 Hrs)
Swapped out PS3 hard drive for a new 1TB drive
Restored data back to PS3 (5.30 Hrs)
Rebooted and works like a charm.

Already downloaded Dead Space 2 and Rock of Ages this morning, PSN seems to be working really fast now, maybe the VM + PSN issue is resolved.

Just can't believe how good PSN+ is :D
