Upgrading RAM n00b

Hi all, my PC currently has 4GB and I want to add to that as it's lagging a bit. I haven't a clue and need some help as to which RAM to buy (DDR3 I presume). Nothing expensive either.

Specification
Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-3240T CPU @ 2.90GHz

What other info do I need? Can I add 8GB to it?

Thanks for your prompt response. I'll definitely look into a SSD. However in the meantime, would the following be suitable for my PC? Can you tell I haven't a clue? lol

Just opened it up and the motherboard is an ASUS n13219. There are two slots, one of which is housing a 4GB stick of ADATA 4GB 1RX8 PC3L-12800U0-11 RAM

What is the max capacity of RAM I could go to?
