Upgrading RAM

Hi, I have this laptop: HP ProBook 470 17.3" FHD Laptop with Dual Storage https://store.hp.com/UKStore/Merch/Product.aspx?id=2RR84EA&opt=ABU&sel=NTB#reviews

I would like to upgrade the ram from 8gb to 16gb.

I spoke to HP support and they said the following:

"The machine in question currently has an 8gb RAM module in it (HP 8 GB 2400 MHz DDR4, Z4Y85AA). It has 2 SODIMM slots and can take a maximum of 32gb RAM (2 x HP 16 GB 2400 MHz DDR4, Z4Y86AA).

You can fit any RAM that is compatible into this machine, even third party, and it will not affect your warranty, unless 3rd part parts are the direct cause of failure.

I would not have the information about what is compatible other than the official HP RAM I have listed. Hope this helps. Let me know if you would like me to quote you."

Since the HP ram they have recommended is super expensive, I'd rather go for another brand.

I am looking at upgrading to 2x 8gb ram.

Can anyone recommend which ram would work with this laptop?

Is there any ram that would not be compatible? / Is there any ram I should avoid?


I would like reliable ram as this laptop is being used to run a server at events.

Any 8GB DDR4 SODIMM that's no slower than 2400MHz should be fine. Kingston or Crucial should have a part that's guaranteed to be compatible.

OcUK doesn't appear to have anything suitable in stock.

Adding faster memory will only help if you replace the existing stick as well (but won't hurt anything).

The configurators for both Kingston and Crucial (and probably others) will provide you with memory that's guaranteed to work for the machine selected.
