I thought this was possible but it seems I have read online that you cannot put the sky q router into modem only mode. Does this mean I can't use it with any upgraded router that isn't a modem/router combo?

Is this FTTC? You can get Openreach modems for a tenner or so on eBay, they are plug and play. Then you’ll need a router which supports DHCP option 61 IIRC for Sky and provide username/password.

Yes it is we've have a Netgear d7000 in place for the last 7 years or so but it keeps dropping the connection every half hour or an hour. Coule I use that in place of a modem then instead if that part isn't the faulty part of course?

You need to just an approved Openreach modem. Or a box with one build in. Refer to the manufacturer documentation.

Buy yourself a Eci Modem then get one of the below routers (other routers are available)
Asus rt ax56u
Asus rt ax 58u
Asus rt ax68u
Asus rt ax86u
Asus rt ax88u
Asus zenwifi xt8 mesh
All can be stock firmware updated to show dhcp option 61 (needed for sky login on the router ) or flashed with merlin.
