I was just about to upgrade my e6300/DS4 system to a Asus P8Z68-V LX with a PowerColor HD7970. I already have a Corsair hx620w PSU.

I just realised the gpu needs two 8 pin power connectors. Its been years since the first build and I dont know where my spare PSU cables are. The ones I have connected is the 24 pin for the mobo, 8 pin that was also connected to the old mobo, a 4 pin that wasnt connected to anything, and a 6 pin converter that is connected to a normal power cable, the ones used for a normal hard drive.

The gpu comes with 2 x 6->8 pin converters. Am I OK using one for the 6 pin? That would mean 3 cables joined together from psu till it reaches the gfx...

What can I do for the other 8 pin thats needed?

Ive been out of the upgrading game too long...thanks!

You have more than enough power.

I have a CX600M supplying an overclocked 2500k and an overclocked DCUii 7970 no sweat.

With regards to your cable situation; I'm not sure but you are probably going to have to fiddle around with adapters and converters!

Thanks.

Maybe the title is misleading, I know the PSU is able to handle it, I am more worried about the cable situation.

Firstly I want to make sure is it OK to use a 4 pin ide power cable, connected to a 6 pin pci-e adapter, which is then connected to a 6 to 8 pin pci-e adapter plugged into the 7970?

Secondly, if I buy a SATA Power to 8-Pin PCI Express adapter (apart from the ide power cable used above only thing I have coming out of the PSU is the 4pin 12v for mobo/cpu and the Sata power cable), will I still be OK to plug in one, maybe 2 hard drives on the same legth of Sata power cable, as it has 3 power plugs on it...

Ive made a Wanted thread in case anyone has a spare Corsair 8 pin pci-e but if not that would have to be my next option..assuming it will be OK..

You can get full individually sleeved sets of cables for these psus for about £30. They would include all the orig cables and look better!

& I would not personally put a expensive gpu on a molex just not worth the risk of it melting inho.
