OK, you lot might think I'm nuts but I couldn't find a thread about this anywhere else. I'm going to be upgrading my system for the new OS.

At the moment I am running XP SP2 on

P4 2.8 Ghz
1GB RAM
Radeon 9800 Pro
2 x 80 GB IDE hard drives
Gigabyte 81PE 1000 Pro mobo

In a nice Praetorian II.

However, I was thinking of upgrading to the following in the next few months:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4200+
2 GB RAM
PowerColor ATI Radeon X850 XT 256MB
2 x 80GB SATA Hard drives
Sapphire PURE Innovation Gruper Radeon Xpress 200P mobo

I realise that new hardware will come out in the months leading up to Vista so this is only a guide for now. I'm on a budget of about £800. So will this lot be OK for the upgrade? I want the new OS to run very smoothly.

I also realise that this upgrade is probably not necessary at all but it's fun :P

Don't buy an expensive graphics card right now. You're going to want one with HDCP if you plan to watch HD movies on it.

Also although this isn't the finalised specification by any means I'd suggest an X2 4400 over the 4200 as it has 1mb L2 cache or alternatively if the budget is strict then getting an X2 3800 and overclocking since it has the 512kb L2 cache of the 4200 and seems to overclock quite well.

I have heard that the Sapphire board has a few problems so I'd suggest reading up on it before committing.
