Upgrading the 8600k to a 9700k worth it now ?

2 years ago I bought a 8600k, MSI Z370-A pro, 8gb X2 team dark 3200 ram and a gtx 1080. It has done me beautifully but it's time for an upgrade.I am playing on. 1440p 144hz g sync monitor.

I've just upgraded my GPU to a ftw3 ultra 3080 which will be coming in a few days and I am predicting some serious bottlenecking. Given that I've just spent 900 on a GPU and PSU, I want to avoid buying a new mobo, ram and cpu if I can.

Is upgrading to a 9700k worth it at this point. I can sell my 8600k for a 100 and buy a 9700k for 250.

Benchmarks seem to place the 9700k 10-15% ahead , but I am wondering if the 8c will make a difference and allow me to keep the cpu for a year or so longer and then pay £500 for a new mobo, ram, cpu set that will last 5y.

Or should I just bite the bullet and go for 5600x .

Seems like the general consensus is if I do get a new CPU for the LGA 1151 socket, is to get a 9900k.

A good point was raised that I didn't consider. Even though my MSI Z370-A Pro could technically run a 9900k, it may have some VRM heating issues and result in throttling.

I think the sensible thing to do is to wait for what Intel/AMD will come up with next year and see if my FPS/FPS lows bothering me with my 8600k. I probably would have bite the bullet for the 5600x but it seems like the AM4 socket is the last in its generation and I dont want to put myself in the same position again.
