can someone just clarify is it possible to upgrade core 2 duo or athlon x2 turions in laptops? im just wondering if its cheaper to buy a slower cpu speed laptop and upgrade it if possible at a later date.
cheers,
stephen.

What laptop ?

Usually you can, with the exception that some laptop system boards have the CPU integrated so cannot be swapped out. Apart from those, they are a normal setup with heatsink as you would find on a desktop.

Obviously make sure its exactly the same cpu, maybe just a bit faster.

Yes, you can usually get at the CPU to change it, but are they designed for it? No. Laptops are a lot more prone to heat issues than desktops, so don't be surprised if, after upgrading the CPU, it runs hot (sometimes too hot). Admittedly the C2D series is a lot less prone to this than previous CPUs. Also remember that with very few exceptions you must use CPUs that are designed for laptops (which tend to be more expensive and harder to find).

I upped the core duo on my M90 from a t2300 to a t7400 core2duo, previously I have swapped our celerons and pentium m's with no adverse effects on numerous dells and toshibas

in some cases a specific heatsink may be required for the faster chip, but so far I have not came across that particular hassle, and always slap on some as5 to both the cpu and gpu if possible to make any heat output via hsf more efficient

as long as you select a faster chip that was originally supported by your chosen chassis, you will not encounter any bios issues

so in answer to your original question, "can I buy a cheapo now and upgrade later ?" then I would say most likely yes, but do some homework first

most laptop forums will have experiences of people doing exactly that and will give you a step by step guide

most manufacturers laptops are scaled meaning that they release a chassis with say a 1.4 celeron m as a bottom end machine and the top of the range might have a 2 gig dual core, in essence the majority of machines can be easily upgraded, heatsinks tend to be the same also
