Upgrading Time Again

Hi all,

Well i think it's time for an upgrade again. reckon it's been around a year and a half since the last one (round about when the Core 2 Duos came out).

Spec at the moment are these:-

Intel Core 2 Duo @ stock 2.4
Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro
Gigabyte DS4-965P
2Gb G-Force DDr2 6400Hz
Enermax Noisetaker 600W
Soundblaster X-Fi
ATI X1900
2 x 500GB W Digital HDD
NEC 20WGX2 20.1 Widescreen monitor
Lian-Li PC60

Will put everything back in the PC60 and keep the monitor, HDD's, X-Fi and PSU.

So basically looking for a CPU, mobo, RAM & gfx card really.

The X1900 i have just now is on it's way out it seems, with artifacts cropping up here and there with the fan set to manual 100% all the time

Will be used mostly for gaming and surfing with a limit of around £400.

have you tried overclocking the processor ?

2gb of pc6400 should be ok tbh.

depending on the state of you're gfx cards, new ones are due out in the next month or so, if you cant hold out go for the bfg 8800GT.

processor wise have a look at the wolfdale 7200 and something like the abit ip35 mobo or
Abit IX38 QuadGT Intel X38.

Not really tried overclocking this one. Tried a few years back and fried a processor

Wouldn't have thought the E7200 would be much of an upgrade over the 6600 i already have??

Everything is ok with this rig just now so no problems waiting for a bit to see what the situation will be with the gfx cards.

on its own its a slight increase in speed, extra comes with it clocking well.

i'd have a go at clocking you're 6600, just monitor the temps, dont put the vcore about 1.4 to keep on the safe side, make sure you're memory is getting the right voltage and add 0.1 to u're northbridge/chipset voltage.

Ok, cheers for the replies.

Had a read of other posts and came up with this so far.

Running at 3Ghz at the moment (333x9) stock voltage

Changed G-Skill 6400HZ memory to 4-4-4-12 timings and upped the voltage on it a tad.

Temps seem to be ok but will keep monitoring.

Not too bad. Anything else i need to do apart from a 12hr test with Orthos?

nope, long as it loads the system that will be fine, monitor the temps and keep them under 60 at load.

as mentioned before keep the vcore to 1.4 max (some might say take it higher up to you if you do), make sure the memory voltage stays in the range specified.

12 hr test last night passed with flying colours and max temp was 56 so everything seems fine.

Never knew it was this easy

Speaking to a guy at work who was asking about PC's and he's interested in buying this computer off me. Me be tempted, but not sure what to ask for it? Will still a full list of bits up tomorrow and hopefully someone can give me some idea of what to ask if i do decide to sell

Price will depend on how much of a fool the guy at work is

At this point I would just add another 2GB of RAM and a graphics card. If your mobo overclocks well then I don't see a point in investing money into a new one.
