Upgrading to 1440p

Hi guys.

At the start of November I'll be upgrading to the ASUS PB278Q 27" 2560x1440 Monitor. I'm currently using a Samsung Syncmaster P2270. 1080p of course.

Now I'm not 100% sure if it's the right move for me to make, I do really need a new monitor, but I can't justify that amount of money on a new piece of kit if I'm going to get a substantial performance drop in games. I don't mind taking a bit of a hit on the graphical settings because I'd rather use a more crisp resolution.

But for example, I don't want to be going from BF4 Ultra, to BF4 low. Any of you guys able to help me? Maybe some personal experience from a similar situation.

Help greatly appreciated, cheers guys.

A GTX690 is going to suffer a bit with 2560x1440 because of its limited VRAM in games like BF4, but I can't see you needing to turn the settings down to low from ultra to maintain your FPS.
 
Yeah the 690 is plenty enough its still a great card in fact i think its overkill for 1080p it should be able to stretch its legs better at @2560 x 1440.

Bf4 will just use as much VRAM as is available on the card anyway its not a massive step up from bf3 imo :)
 
Your card will be enough to run games at 1440p might be a few that you can't fully max settings out on for high fps but you won't know till you have it.
 
I gamed on one 7950 @1440p for ages and it was fine, so I expect your 690 will be grand. I now have two 7950s though, and the more demanding games out there really needed it (think tomb raider).

Biggest load of tosh I've heard.

I play at 1440p with my 560TI 448 on high settings.

I didn't say it wouldn't "play". :confused:

The 2GB of VRAM and the 256bit memory bus IS a bottleneck to performance at 2560x1440, adding AA pulls performance down even more.

Overclock the RAM on a 690 and the FPS will go up because overclocking the RAM increases memory bandwidth, it's just not enough to remove the bottleneck.

Cant say I had any issues with my 690 and 1440p/60Hz. Tbh it's about the best card I have owned and I wish I had hung on to it.

Well my 680 tears through most games at 1440p so I'm pretty certain a 690 would!
 
Ordered the ASUS PB278Q! Can't wait for it to arrive, thanks for all of your input guys.

Hope it's worth it! ;)
 
Monitor arrived. It's fantastic, thanks for the reccomendations guys. Took a slight hit in some games but putting a few settings down was easily worth it for the higher resolution.

Went from BF4 Ultra at 1920x1080 to BF4 High at 2560x1440 and it looks better just because of the res. If anyone is on the fence about getting a similar monitor like I was, you will NOT regret it :)
 
Hi Jacaby,

Im thinking about this monitor although its way over my original budget, just need to know if my i7 @4.4, 2 x 7950 xfire, 8 gb 2133 mhz is going to make it worth the investment, and run everything at high settings?
