Upgrading to 32gb

I'm looking to upgrade to 32GB because my flight sim DCS world eats ram in online mode.

I currently have 16GB, but I think it would be hard to buy the same stuff I already have, so should mix and match a different brand, or would I need to buy a 32GB kit instead?

Thanks for any help.

I'd agree with the above, if you can upgrade the memory's Mhz at the same time I think you'd see a big improvement. That said, most 2133 - 2666 memory can be overclocked to 3000 Mhz easily.

Since you have a 6th gen board, I'd try to get double sided 16GB dimms if you can because they don't officially support high density memory.

I would try and run your existing memory at 2666, run it like this for say 1 week to see if it's stable.

If it's stable at 2666, I would buy some extra 2 x 8GB of 2666 and similar timings to use with it.

It's true 3000 and above speed would be a little faster, however in reality it won't be much difference, and overclocking your 2400 to 2666 and buying more 2666 will be most cost effective.

I did some reading and I think I will just buy some new 32GB ram sticks to save any problems and also get ones that are 3200 as that should work on my MB?

Do you mean 32GB dimms? To my knowledge, these are not widely supported on 6th gen boards (8th/9th gen have bios updates). I'd ask Gigabyte before you buy them.

RAM is very cheap at the moment so rather get a 2 by 16gig kit at £99 and enjoy.

you can mix and match odd ram modules for more capacity in my experience, it just down clocks all ram modules to the slowest speed DIMMs.

Personally given that your old kit is a slower rated kit, I'd buy a new 32GB rather than trying to find another 16Gb kit and having to run at a slower speed.

Either of these kits should be fine, and then sell your existing kit:

Not that I'm up on the trends of older Intel hardware but isn't 32GB at 3200 speed pushing it for a 6600k IMC?

Possibly, but faster ram can always be run at slower speeds if needed (e.g. 3000/2800/2666/2400 or even the Intel recommended spec 2133) - there isn't a point in buying older, slower ram, as it tends to be more expensive that the current widely available speeds

It's hard to find much info on using 32gb with 6th gen, or even 16gb sticks, because 32GB dimms didn't even exist when skylake launched and 16gb were all double sided :o
