I have the following in my PC

Intel E8200 2.66
4GB OCZ Gold 6400
Gigabyte 965P DS3
Gainward 8800GTS 640MB

And I'm using Vista 64. I get BSODs in games constantly which say System Service Exception and from researching the problem I'm sure its the card. Its always done it since going from XP to Vista but having just started using the pc for gaming it happens too often to put with anymore.

I'm planning a full upgrade but money is tight so going to upgrade the card first. Never had an ATI card but as long as it works I'm happy.

Have you tried different drivers? Has your research led you to believe that this is a hardware problem rather than a software one. The GPU you have is a nice chip and will perform well in most games.

If you are not under warranty and sure that it is the card then the 5850 would be a nice boost. Overclocking that E8200 to something like 3.4Ghz would see you also some nice boost in games.

I've tried OCing the CPU but it never holds - in as much as it runs clocked at 3Ghz without falling over (other than the card) and then the next time I turn the machine on its back to stock. I did ask in the mobo section (Gigabyte DS3) but never got an answer as to why. So I gave up.

I've tried different Nvidia drivers - latest and older ones and they all give BSODs but with different reasons. I had the card on 174 drivers and it just said "System Halted".

I can be on the internet or watch films and leave the machine on all night and its fine. Play a game and it will crash usually within 30 mins and keep doing so in game.

Your motherboard has a fairly old chipset, which is why you may have trouble overclocking. On one of my old motherboards (945 chipset), I could only squeeze 2.3GHz out of an E2160, whereas the same CPU was stable at 3.2 on a P35 chipset board.

Back on topic: yes, the 5850 should give you a nice boost over an 8800GTS.

see the 58** update thread. Fatboy posts in there the expected delivery of each product and how many left over from pre-orders.

I think XFX 5850 are the next expected ones in today with spares currently available.
