I am going to be buying a new FX 8320e, as an upgrade to my Phenom 965BE shortly. I have an Asus Sabertooth 990FX motherboard and the CPU is cooled by a Thermolab Baram with a single Noctua fan, which I believe is a PWM fan? I am a bit of a noob regarding these things and am lucky enough to have mates nearby to set this stuff up for me.

I want to do it alone this time.

Now I know I need some more cooling so am wondering if it would be best to just buy another Noctua fan to run in push-pull, or buy two new fans. I also assume that my motherboard can run two PWM fans?

What is the best thing to do? Am not too concerned regarding the cost, so if there is a good new set of fans out there, I am interested. I am sure the cooler itself is more than adequate so am not looking to replace it.

Many thanks!

Your heatsink will be fine. If you already have an inline exhaust fan an extra one on the heatsink would be a waste.

Your motherboard should support at least 4 PWM fans but the best place for an extra fan is blowing directly on the socket area, rather than through the heatsink. The core temps themselves rarely ever become a problem.

Will be interested to see how it goes! Seen some good things from the new(er) chips they've brought out :)

+1

Definitely interested in your experiences. You should see good improvements over the PhenomII and you have the motherboard to do it.

It should be an easy swap as you are keeping all other components incl. the cooler. I usually put a thin line of paste about 12mm long on top of the heatspreader before placing the heatsink back on.

Make sure you update the bios, if necessary for the FX series, before you remove the current CPU.

BIOS was updated ages ago to 1604, which is still the latest.

I am going to pull the trigger, just waiting for it to hit sub £100.00. Should have bought when they were £95.00.

Straight swop over and no OS reinstall is the plan.
