Currently got a QX9650 a crappy gigabyte mobo and 4gig ddr2 i also got a sunbeam freezer cooler.
Just wondering should i want to do an upgrade to i7 without selling any existing parts what is the least i will have to spend? Also got a 4870x2 and a 700w power supply.
I gather i need a new mobo cooler cpu and ram?

£360 absolute cheapest, but worth spending 400-450, so as you get 6 gig of RAM (3x2) and a bit better mobo, maybe aftermarket cooler

Intel Core i7 920 D0 Stepping (SLBEJ) 2.66Ghz (Nehalem) (Socket LGA1366) - Retail £205.99 (£179.12)
MSI X58M Intel X58 (Socket 1366) PCI-Express mATX DDR3 Motherboard £124.98 (£108.68)
G.Skill 3GB (3x1GB) DDR3 NQ PC3-10666C9 1333MHz Triple Channel (F3-10666CL9T-3GBNQ) £28.99 (£25.21)
Sub Total : £313.01

Slightly better, better mobo and twice as much RAM and higher clocked RAM, again your call on aftermarket cooler, a titan fenrir would add another £33

Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD3R Intel X58 (Socket 1366) PCI-Express DDR3 Motherboard £143.99 (£125.21) or the Asus P6T SE - same price, but the gigabyte supports SLI too
OCZ Gold 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C8 (1600MHz) Tri-Channel (OCZ3G1600LV6GK) £77.99 (£67.82) or the Corsair at £1 more

Thanks for that. Are mobo ram processor packs worth looking into and if so which one looks appealing?

Not if you want to clock it yourself really. 920 D0, Gigabyte UD5 and 6gb patriot ram seems to be the most common choice around here.

If you don't want someone else to overclock it, and don't want to clock it yourself, 6gb of slow ram and the 'low end' gigabyte are probably where to look. All the x58 boards are rather good.

Before you upgrade make sure

1) you will be able to sell your old stuff for a good price (unless you have something in mind for them??), and

2) you really need/ want! to upgrade

I say this having myself recently gone from an e8600@4ghz w/4gb ram to an 920@4ghz w/6gb ram!

I freely confess that this was a mostly bonkers move! .... but I really wanted an I7

Still if your going from a qx9650 your going to need to spend a bit of money to get much worth out of i=7... at least 6gb of good memory (1600mhz most likely) and a decent cooler to get an 920 to 4ghz +

If you are into gaming, loves to keep up with the technology and can pay for it, then it is never bonkers! :)

I have gone from an Athlon Barton to the i7.. performance increase is immensed.

you can pick up i7s for about 125 on the mmn mobo at around 150 and rams not that expensive either so should be able to get it for around the £250 mark i dont need to buy ram so im doing this right now and its not gonna cost me much at all :D

Get a 920, the Gigabyte UD3R, 6GB OCZ RAM, and a good cooler (I got the Noctua). Much cheaper than the bundle and mine goes up to 4.2Ghz, though I run at 4Ghz because 4.2 is very hot.
