You should probably only consider a "fresh" upgrade, especially with the change to gnome 3.

It's probably best to wipe and re-install.

As above it is possible, but is it worth the hassle later on should something not work properly?

This is the main reason to keep your '/home/' and '/' in separate partitions. When I want to upgrade I just format / and reinstall OS

Quoted for truth. After a couple of harsh lessons learned, I never do in-place upgrades any more (unless I'm on a rolling release distro like Sabayon). Far better to keep /home separate and do a fresh install each time. It's just less hassle in the long run.
