Guys can you help I'm upgrading my pc and I have the first edition Q6600 and I was wondering if I upgraded to a yorkfield Q9550 would I see a marked improvement it will be on a striker extreme mb/gtx 260 and ocz 4gig Ram 1066.

Yes, you would.
Answer is vague as question was vague.

Intended use? Reason q6600 is capped at 2.8ghz? Cooling system?

Clock for clock, Yorkfield (q9550) is 8-10% faster clock for clock compared to Kentsfield (q6600). Plus with higher initial clocks the q9550 is definitely the faster chip at stock. The improvement would not exactly be marked, probably about 20% faster comparing the stock q6600 to a stock q9550. At the speed you are running, you will likely see less than 10% difference.

For the cost of a £200 chip, I think it makes more sense to overclock your q6600 past 3.4GHZ (not too hard on that board) and spend a few quid on extra cooling if required. Then you can save yur money for an i7 platform, and believe me, the difference between c2q and i7 is marked.

+1 for the above as financially it would not be a great peformance gain especially if you're prepared to clock your existing chip.

You can pick up great third party cpu coolers for around £20 - then clock it and gain free mileage.

Yes it will be faster, and will probably overclock further, but I'd do as cmndr_andi recommends and get better cooling for your Q6600 that you already have and overclock that further if possible. The Q9550 upgrade in performance is not worth £200 odd imo.

ah sorry about the vaugeness i had just worked a 14hr night shift basicly i cant oc my q6600 any further as it results in bsod or my pc freezes and i have to reset cmos i have watercooling on the cpu with max temps underload ie prime95/folding@home of around 40-45c but for some reason could never get my q6600 any faster its probaly me doing something wrong i changed the voltages and the fsb but couldent change the ram settings without serious unstablity.
just being lazy but how much would an i7 mb and cpu set me back cheapest to dearest.

oh my rig will be used for heavy gaming and internet

According to the CPU support list for your board here, you will not be able to run a Q9550.

A cheap i7 setup will cost you in the region of £500.

Have you thought about just upgraging your gfx card -that seems to be the weakest link in your rig (only just - as it's great spec looking at your sig).

If you plugged in a 4870 or a Nvidia equivalent into your current spec it would be a monster again - more than sufficient for gaming and internet use.

It's by far the cheaper and simpler option, especially considering your water cooled.

wow reflux thanks for that i and more importantly the wife would have been ****ed if i had bought that cpu and it not work.
i have been thinking about getting a new mb as the strikers getting a little old now, though i think i will have to keep it a little longer as i have just bought some ocz ddr2 memory so i will hang on for a while with my current rig and maybe try to sort out my oc gremlins with my q6600.

yes i need to update my sig at the end of this week (pay day) im going to get a gtx260 to replace my 8800 as its dead and i hacve replaced the geil ram with ocz gold 1066 4gig,i never did like my geil ram so maybe now with the ocz ram i may get a little further on my oc i think i need a little help oc someone to point out where im going wrong maybe.

You may find this thread of some use. But it's heavily related to 4 sticks of memory.

Have you tried throttling back your memory frequency just to see if you get the system stable at higher clocks?

wasnt there an issue with the 680i chipset on the original striker not supporting 45nm quads? a quick google search suggests it still doesnt and never will. then again i ran a 45nm quad on my 650i chipset for a while it worked but didnt overclock at all, might be the same.

Hmmm I don't know what "nm" my CPU is as my pc isn't working at the mo the only thing I can say is that I bought it when the very first quads came out it's the one that runs hot. So if I do have the quad that's not compatable with my striker what mb would you recomend though nothing more than £100 please.

Hmm nice board I may have to invest in that next payday. Ok so my q6600 is the right one for my striker so I have my new ram ocz 4gig 1066 came today I'm ordering my gtx 260 tonight as soon as my wages goes in I'm going to have it next day delivery for saturday so hopefully I will be up and running again Saturday afternoon and overclocking by supper :-)

Reflux how does that board you Recomended to me compair to my striker extreme oc potential and features etc.
Thanks reflux you have been very helpful to me.
