Upgrading to Windows 11

Hi folks,

Dawned on me the other day I am still using Win 10. My machine is incompatible though. Is there anything I can do to ignore this shenanigans?

Edit: wtfbbq my CPU was actually ordered/received 09/05/2015. Dayum this thing has done me well!
 
You can use Windows 10 for another year, and maybe you want a new pc anyway, so that'd be end of story.

It is possible to install Windows 11 on unsupported cpus, or at least it was when I did it, if you want to go down that route the first step is to run WhyNotWin11 to make sure you're aware of all potential issues. (If you post a screenshot of your results I can help further)

Top man will take a look thank you. I posted not that long ago about upgrading and despite 9 years of use we couldn't find a good reason to...
 
Use Rufus to burn the ISO to USB and it will give you the option to remove the Windows 11 requirements. Just need to download the Windows 11 ISO from Microsoft.
 
All you need is the below registry key to copy to the USB stick you're installing Windows 11 from. From the installer, hit Shift + F10, type in D:\bypass.reg (change path as required) and accept the warnings.

Had a poorly child through the night so haven't started yet. I assume I'll need to create an iso with Rufus and act as if I'm doing a fresh install, but it'll offer an upgrade?
 
You might be able to install W11. I couldn't on a AMD 610e AM3 nor a Xeon 5760. But I'm pretty sure I did on a old pentium dual core laptop. huh.

You have to select whether to use MBR or GPT partition system on the stick. On mine I used MBR.

do the thing I said, that will inform what to do next, don't just rush straight into an install

but no, if you end up installing it'll be a clean install

Do you really need windows? Linux mint or ubuntu have come on leaps and bounds and are super easy to use and just 'work'...

You can get Steam on linux aswell, so it's even good for games...most of the time ;)

You can boot them from USB to give them a test drive...

Too dependant on Windows software still. I know there are alternatives etc etc but it isn't a now thing.

That maybe so, but what software? google sheets is all online, ms office online too, or just use libre office if you want something installed...so many things are basically just web apps these days... and all the major software vendors have native linux apps...

Nice, that confirms there should be no surprises, so you can go ahead and install Windows 11. Remember it's a clean install so backup first.

It's worth noting that the major Windows 11 updates (23H2, 24H2) haven't been installing automatically when Windows 11 is installed on an unsupported cpu, but it can be done manually. After the install check which update it installed.

The general process is to download the Windows 11 iso, then use Rufus to use the iso to create an installation usb drive, checking the option to bypass tpm/cpu requirement. Then boot off the usb and install Windows as normal.

Here are some links I bookmarked when I went through this process, I remember the instructions were not perfect, Rufus changed since the screenshots, I had to download the iso manually rather than getting Rufus to do it, so don't worry if reality doesn't exactly match the instructions:

I just upgraded from an i7 6700k for this same issue given end of support for Windows 10 in October 2025. There are methods to bypass it but I heard that Windows complications could arise with updates further down the line for these CPUs.
 
Came here for same.

I have 2 machines that would be scrap otherwise. I'll carry on with win 10 (as I do not really like win 11)until the very end.

But good to see there are options.

It shouldn't be a problem. 7th gen is basically the same as 8th-10th and 6th gen just needs TPM and secure boot enabled, which can be sorted. Missing MBEC does slow it down compared to 7th gen (if the security features are enabled).
