Hello all,

I've unknowingly been running Windows XP (original) since I last reformatted. I've tried automatic updates to install SP2 but I keep getting an Internal Error during installation.

Is there anyway to get around this error or to install SP2 via my Windows SP2 CD without loosing my registry, etc. Reformatting is also last on my list of things I want to do.

Thanks.

It's up to you, but I would say it's definitely worthwhile slipstreaming SP2 into a new install disk and reinstalling - I've seen too many machines knackered by using post install service packs.

Sound advice I'd say.

Get nLite and integrate the RyanVM pack into that. Make an ISO and install Windows XP SP2. :)

There are plenty of threads here about nLite or you can check out the site and the forum relating to nLite.

Just to give some more info on this:

"I'm having some problems installing Windows XP SP2. I've downloaded the update and even tried using Automatic Updates however they all have the same end result of "Internal Error". I've tried with Safe Mode too.

I've tried doing the answer at the bottom of this thread.

I have also tried using the fixdb.dat file that's scattered around Google.

Does anyone have any other ideas?"

BTW, can I reinstall SP2 without deleting my registry and other files or would it just be less hassle to do a full reformat?

Windows Update is now only available for SP1 or higher on XP. If XP without a Service Pack then need to get a download from Microsoft Website to install SP2.
