Upgrading/wait for Black Friday?

So I’m looking at a £1600-£1800(mostly prebuilt) system and I’m wondering if people with some experience could tell me if it’s likely to be a good idea to wait until Black Friday? I know it’s slightly early but it’s such a large sum of money so I guess it’s more worthwhile thinking about.

The PC is

I’ll likely to trying to ask to change a change things
Case: Fractal Define R6
GPU: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1080 G1 Gaming
CPU Cooling: Noctua D-15

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

I don't think the system is worth that money. Simply put Intel systems are ludicrously priced at the moment. You could wait for black friday regardless of what setup you choose and maybe knock of a couple hundred from the price but If you intend to spend £1800 I highly recommend going for something like this instead and paying the £70 or so for OCUK to build it for you if you don't want to.

Total: £1,736.13 (includes shipping: £15.30)

Somthing like this still gets you a very capable CPU with an exceptional cooler, a very fast m2 SSD drive and an RX2080 instead of the 1080. There is also the option of saving £300 here if you got a Vega64 which i'd say is still a better overall card than the regular 1080. Also £130 for the cooler could technically come off if you wanted since the cpu comes with one anyway (obviously not as good and doesn't look as cool :)).

I’m getting a headache even thinking about building pcs and configuring something decent haha.

I was under the impression it was a solid choice but I mean I’ve taken your build and swapped out the m.2 for the same, but 500gb version, swapped out the gpu for my original 1080 gtx 1080 g1 and removed the aio. Whatcha think? It’s currently sitting at just below £1500 which is actually originally what I planned to spend (too end).

Also, the mobo you suggested is a pre order?

Yea that would be a great system and 200 down on the original setup. 5 are in stock for the board. It's the case that you wanted that are on pre-order unfortunately.

I'd maybe still consider the Vega64 as they do tend to be a bit faster than 1080s while still being £50 cheaper and comes with a few free games.

I’ll have a look at the Vega, tbh I’ve hardly looked into them at all.

I’ve just double checked and it’s still saying the mobo is on pre order, and the case is listed as out of stock. Perhaps it’s some kind of glitch or something haha?

Are you sure your not mixing up the board I had with the one lee32uk picked on his build?

You want a board with good VRM's if going with an 8 core, especially when overclocking. Not sure why the Gigabyte X470 is pre-order as they have been out quite a while now. Maybe check with ocuk or ask the Gigabyte rep if he knows @GIGA-Man

The Aorus is £20 more if you want a better model. What monitor are you going to be using ?

Ah yeah that seems to solve the problem. Well I’m looking for something that I can use with an Xbox too so that I can get rid of my TV. Originally I was thinking Acer xb271hu.

And would you advise OCing the CPU? (Then purchasing the cooler) What about the GPU too?

Edit: just as a thought to keep costs down. Would it not work to keep both stock and then use the stock cpu cooler with the 2700x?

@Joshuk

do you have a monitor ? if not, does that have a separate budget or need to be included ?

^^^ perfectly fine, Decent cooler to allow overclock for all cores- stock cooler not as good as 2nd gens . GPU is fine, specially with a good case and airflow

A 1080 ti would be fine then for that monitor as it is 1440p/165Hz G-Sync.

I would definitely overclock the cpu. Would be a waste not to. The Alpenfohn I listed or even something cheaper like a Cryorig H7 would do for a decent overclock. The R7 1700 is only £179.99 compared to £259.99 for the 2700 and £289.99 for the 2700X so even with a decent cooler it works out cheaper.

The gpu can easily be overclocked as well using MSI Afterburner.

I don’t have the minitor, I’m looking for something compatible with an Xbox (possibly xb271hu) but I’m still looking into it. It will definitely be 1440p and 144hz+.

So you’d OC both and leave the cooling stock?

I don’t think I want to lose any more performance on the cpu so it would have to be 2700x for me I think unless I went back to an intel build. I would likely have a Noctua d-15 in mind if I was to go for a cpu cooler?

You are not getting an extra £110 performance by going with the 2700X though. That money is better spent on the gpu/monitor. Of course it is your money and your decision. If you are set on the R7 2xxx series then go with the slightly cheaper R7 2700. You can still fit the 1080 ti in if your budget is up to £1800.

Not a fan of the Noctua colour scheme myself, but it is a great cooler. The BeQuiet Dark Rock Pro 4 offers similar performance but it is a bit more fiddly to install. I would stick with low profile Ram such as Corsair LPX to avoid any potential clearance issues.

I think it’s just because I’m happy to spend the money as long as I feel that it’s worth it. That’s the big thing for me and obviously having limited knowledge makes it harder to determine if it’s worth it or not.

‘’If you spend some money on good cooling, there's no reason to manually overclock Ryzen 7 2700X. Thanks to XFR2, AMD's flagship should remain stable above 4 GHz, even under full load. Try to go any higher and you'll pay a hefty price in heat, power, and possibly long-term reliability.‘’ can somebody translate this for me haha? So I was reading about OCing and stock cooling etc and I keep coming across XFR2. Does that mean that it will boost itself as high as it can depending on how cool it is, for example if I had a good cooler on it then it’d think ‘right I’m happy to boost to 4ghz’?
