Hi

I'm looking at putting together a new rig for BF3 in a few months, current machine is long in the tooth now but there a few items that I'm not sure i should get rid of, specifically;

Tuniq tower cpu heatsink
Raptor 128gb hd

Have heatsinks improved much in last 3-4 years? Also how many posts do you need for members market

For you - another 11.

I'd bung what you've got on there too. The tower you've got there may not fit the new sockets out there (unless tuniq do a kit for the new sockets)

The raptor may be quick for access times but It'll probably get beaten by the latest HD's for read/writes.

You can buy SSD's the same size as the raptor for 180 notes which will basically chew up & spit out that raptor for performance.

Hi there,

The Tuniq Tower is still a good CPU cooler. You can buy CPU mounts for modern Intel CPU sockets (s1155 uses the same cooler mounting holes as s1156) on the Tuniq website (possibly other places too). Using these updated mounts will mean you will be able to cool modern CPUs very effectively, even when overclocked.

As for the raptor, I probably wouldn't stick with it. Modern 7200RPM drives are almost as fast, but offer much more storage space, are quieter and are dirt cheap. Also, if you want speed, an SSD would be significantly faster than the raptor and is silent.

If you are looking to upgrade soon, then I would suggest going for either an i5 2500K + P67(rev B) system or wait to see how AMD's next generation "Bulldozer" CPUs turn out - which are expected in June/July.

For upgrade will have budget of about £1000 but this will need to include a new monitor, 23" or 24"

Update on this, now ready to fork out for it this pc (viewsonic monitor died!)and wanted a recap on above if possible. Have a few points to add

-Budget £1,000 before VAT, not after
-Need a PSU able to handle crossfire 6950 for future proof
-8gb ram preferably

Lastly i would prefer the quietest 6950 available, I read some of the coolers are so big they can't be crossfired on particular motherboards so would need to consider that.

Would be willing to go above budget to get a quiter machine, not talking water based though!, just case and graphics card really, will be sticking with tuniq tower for cpu

Help is appreciated

So a base unit with Win7 and a monitor?

So thats 8Gb ram, Crossfire capable board and PSU and a 6950 with a custom cooler.

Then remove the Gelid cooler and stick with your Tuniq Tower if it fits?

I wouldnt buy anything until maybe 1-2 weeks before BF3. The prices from now until those weeks will Drop so much, So much that we will would even spec you a better system then instead of now so i would wait.

£1000 before VAT? If thats the case take Stulids build throw in a bigger HDD and either an ssd or a better gpu, if it was me id just get a bigger HDD and keep the spare cash until the machine needs upgrading again (:

I need a new monitor and there won't be new Graphics cards before BF3 so think it's the right time to buy. Please don't talk me out of it :)

Few tweaks i'll probably make to stulids recommendation is a slightly better/quieter 6950 (i think?) and storage below. Anyone know if the case fans on cooler master are decent?
