thinking of doing the upgrade/downgrade/sidegrade to windows 10. got multiple user accounts and apps and their configs. will i loose any stuff or is it all straight forward?

hmm forget that then will stick with win7 for a few more years. its probably going to be more stable and reliable than windows 10 and probably more secure too even if they do turn off the updates.

I'd say successful upgrades have been more common than failed but failures do happen.

I'm not quite sure what to make of Windows 10 security wise - some of the recent updates have had massive amount of security patches for vulnerabilities around 1/3rd of which should never have gotten into a live build in the first place but on the other hand they are at the moment very quick at rolling out fixes and seemingly ahead of widespread use of these exploits in the wild.

Personally I'm sticking with Windows 7 as long as I can on the machines I use most where I have any choice in the matter (some of my newer systems don't have drivers for anything older or I'd put them on 7) it has proven to be far more dependable for me than 10 and far less likely to try and take control away from the user. Also with 7 I've personally found the experience gaming overall better - on my 10 machines sometimes it will get stuttery in-game at random only to find some Windows 10 background process has decided to become busy of its own accord, etc. something that never happens to that level in 7.

You will most definitely lose a polished, good looking OS which will be replaced with a rather bland and basic looking UI!

Well it is known to fail on the upgrade.
I would back the profiles up first.

I never had any failed upgrades on 10, but as always you should have your important stuff backed up regardless of using Win7,10 or even Linux etc, yes failed upgrades can happen on any OS, so always a risk regardless of OS in question.

I always have my important files backed up, ironically last time I lost all of my stuff was on Win7 (not blaming 7 for faulty hardware) with faulty ram which corrupted my HD, you never know when you may lose your important stuff.

well i suppose i could make a system image of the os drive. its 75gb of space used and iv got plenty of storage to put it on. so if it fails i can restore image back to win7.

only reason to go win10 is because new games are win10 exclusives like forza horizon and grid etc. wondering if i can just use a LTSC build of win10 for less headaches when updates are rolled out.

I recently changed from Win7 to Win10 after reading somewhere that in January 2020 Microsoft will stop allowing Windows 7 uses to upgrade to 10. I put it off for years because I had my OS running since 2011 and I wasn't too keen on the changes and ads and Cortana and things.

I chose not to do the "Upgrade" path because of fears something would go wrong, so instead I spent an entire day sorting my data and backed everything up onto an external HDD, and then ran a clean USB install using my Win7 key to activate Win10. Everything went fine. Win10 takes a little getting used to with tweaking the layout, changing privacy settings, disabling Cortana and generally getting used to the changes etc. But ultimately I'm glad I did now, it's also nice having a fresh start from my old bogged down computer.

Windows 10 is just a big mess with forced updates. Is it possible to block all updates and only allow manual update checking and installing?

In theory, yes. However 10 is notorious for turning forced updates back on with security updates.

There is a script Dirk I think it was posted that works though can have some downsides on specific setups if you want more granular control of updates.

I've found Windows 10 seems to eventually force past most other attempts to control it including stuff like Shutup10.

gettings things ready now, using a 2nd pc i got to setup the install of windows 10. gonna use ltsc build so i dont get shafted with dodgey updates.

running win10 now. cant believe how lame it is. doesnt even have the photo viewer what win7 had. have to use registry hacks just to get it.
