So, I have been reading about the upgrade from amd single to dual core, the hotfix, the amd optimiser etc.
I just want to be clear what I need to do from an intel perspective. There must be some experience out there - a few of you already have core 2 duos and a few must have dual core pentiums.

Do I need a reinstall of windows? or not? or will a repair do instead?
Do I need to install the hotfix?
I obviously will not bother with the AMD optimiser... ;)
Is there anything else I need to do?

I have a p5w dh, a celery 2.53ghz, 800mhz ddr2, an x-fi and a x1800xt.

Any ideas guys?

changing motherboards since hal different will likely need at least a repair of windows. Upgrading a cpu will possibly need activation of xp

I usually reinstall anyway so dont have any of the older drivers and know my system is going to be stable.

If changing the mobo then i'd completely reinstall Windows. You'll have no end of hassle if you dont. A mobo needs all sorts of drivers specific to its own type and you dont want these still floating around all over the shop.

I am not building a complete system - i just did that with the celeron to flash the *swearword* bios of the p5w dh deluxe so it will accept my e6600 when it eventually arrives...( if you do not know what I am talking about, search the motherboard forum for p5w dh deluxe  )
All I need to do is unclip my scythe ninja, take out the celeron, pop in the e6600 then replace the ninja with some nice fresh as5.
In that case do you think I will not need to reinstall or repair windows?
What about the whole multicore hotfix thingie?

Thanks for the advice..

In that case no.
On first boot Windows will detect the second core and ask you to reboot immediately to finish installing new hardware.
That's it - job done.
It's like moving from a non-HT CPU to one that does HT, no need for a total reinstall.

well i've just installed my e6600 and i have noticeable jerks in brothers in arms that came with my gfx card along with very low fps in unrealtournament 99. not sure if it's down to the dual cores... see what others have to say on the matter.

Have now upgraded. No problems with q4, fear, half-life2 ep1 - no jerking - all running smooth at 1280x1024 with 4xaa and 8xaniso.

im at max everything and ive not even ocD!!! no strain what so ever !!!!
fear ha I laugh at the pathetic attempt to hog my system resources!!!
everything maxed = min frames 47 max 257.... it eats it for breakfast!
