... and im wondering if a fancy new router/modem would make much of a difference from the stock one! (same goes for a network card instead of the one on my mobo... - I'd heard of one called the 'Killer NIC' but can't seem to find any in the UK as of yet.

A phone line has been recently put up, so i am hoping this will help and we're not to far from the exchange (1.5km - straight line)

So far i've come up with this - aka.. the most expensive ones :p

btw, only one pc in the house

Because of the price the plan was to go onto Sky Broadband (16mb) but im open to more suggestions <£25 if you can... :)

They're hardly the most expensive bits of kit...

You don't need an ADSL modem with the DG834 (since it has it's own), and the DG834 only has a 10/100Mbps switch, so unless you've got (or you're buying) a gigabit switch a gigabit network card is a waste of time.

A different version of an identical router? No.

Some folks see better results with Billion routers, but there's the hassle in getting the username and password out.

Are there no better routers than the ones that come with most ISPs?

Billion's have been shown to work better on lines with poor stats for some people but :

a) you don't know if you have poor line stats yet...
b) the nic on your motherboard is more than capable of what you need to access the interent at the maximum speed your line can support and the killer NIC will cost you a years ADSL sub's while providing little if any improvment over your onboard NIC.
c) You are asking if buying a router that performs *identically* to the one you would be given for free will improve your speeds.... It's the same hardware with a wireless card slapped in!

Yes better routers exist but it depends on what you want to do with your router, the 834 series are solid reliable routers (especially the later v3 units that are shipping).
