Hi all

I currently have the following:

Intel Core 2 Duo E6320 1.86ghz
Gigabyte P35C DS3R
4x1GB RAM

What kind of performance increase would I see if I were to upgrade to:

Gigabyte GA-P55-UD3
Intel Core i3 530 2.93GHz (Clarkdale) (Socket LGA1156) - OEM
OCZ Platinum 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-10666C7 1333MHz Dual Channel Kit

Is it worthwhile?

Upgrade you current computer!!

Your motherboard can take any current socket 775 quad core:

I would look to get a Q9400 or Q9550.

Both are much faster than a Core i3 530:

I hate upgrading "old" tech... It's either a new PC or I stay as is :p Hence the upgrade lol

The Core i3 is slower. If a simple CPU upgrade is going to give me a massive performance boost over a "newer" setup then the new setup is pointless.

The Q9550 is under £180 whereas the Core i3 "upgrade" will be at least £240. Newer does not always mean better.

I would save up another £50 to £60 and get a Core i5 750 instead.

If you want new technology Intel is releasing Sandy Bridge next year and AMD is releasing Bulldozer next year too. These are completely new architectures.

The i3 is slower but from the links you gave me faster than mine...Thanks for the suggestion but I really am not interested in upgrading to a Q9550 - especially since selling an e6320 is much harder than selling a whole system or retiring it to a backup system

The difference between older 775 quads and the new core i3s is admitedly minimal, but at least with a newer P55/H55/H57 board the OP can upgrade to core i5 or even core i7 at a later date.

Besides which the skt 775 quad prices are extortionate nowadays!

That too :) Especially since I'm already running a second video card on a PCI-E riser to run it @ 1x

Getting a new mobo solves that!
