"Upload speed is very important to online gaming, a minimum of 280Kbps is required to avoid gaming problems, and fortunately most UK broadband providers have 480Kbps upload speeds."
but I'm not an online gamer, I'm sure others will tell you if this is about correct, I guess it depends a lot on what games you are playing too.
when ever we had lan party at uni, we found that you could get away with a low upload speed, if there was not to much online talking, because voice took at lot of data, tho does take some of the fun away
If you've got 10 people all connected to an online server then you'll want more than 256kbit upload really - otherwise you might have to start messing with maxpackets type settings/etc.

If you're spread out around the house and need to communicate with each other, just host a TS/Ventrilo server locally on someones PC to save using up bandwidth over the interwebs.
