I don't have any issue crossing my legs, and my fruits are of a pretty good size. I can only assume that those who struggle are either fatties, or have small scrotums that can't stretch, mine is quite happy sat up top deck.

I think if you picture an old boys club with the chaps sat around the open fire on high-backed chairs reading a broadsheet, it somehow conjures up this image that they will be sat knee-over-knee. It's just a silly association, but it does look more sophisticated than legs spread wide or ankle-over-knee.
