I got some cash during christmas since that was the only thing I wished for, but still not quite know what to spend them on other than on my PC I thought about upgrading to 32GB Ram on my Asus P9X79 Pro (8x 4GB sticks).
At the moment I have 4x4GB 16GB Crucial BallistiX Tactical 1600MHz CL8-8-8-24 1T 1.5v, and I have thought about another kit, but I fear the Ram are too tall to fit under the CPU cooler since the ram Dimm is close to the cooler - so therefore I am only looking for low profile memory.

I have though of getting 1866MHz/2133Mhz memory but I have been told that the X79 chipset doesn't do well with 1866MHz when it's populating all Dimms ? I don't know if that's true ?.

Would it make sense to upgrade to 1866MHz ?

I have thought of 4 sets of these G.Skill Ares http://www.gskill.com/products.php?index=484

Or 4 sets of Corsair Vengeance Low Profile 1866MHz

Or should I go for 2133 MHz memory like two sets of these IF the X79 chipset can run with all 8 Dimms full at 2133Mhz 11-11-11-27 ?

i was recently in the same boat as you..i was looking at the g skill ares but decided to go for the kingston hyperx genesis
KHX1866C9D3K2/8GX
i have the xigmatek aegir cooler which looks similiar to yours and these fit with no trouble
edit. i also have the same case as you..the II lite edition

I have looked at those too but I feel "safer" with 1.5v ram :)

I have also looked at these http://www.corsair.com/en/memory-by...nnel-ddr3-memory-kit-cml16gx3m4a2133c11b.html
Perhaps such two sets if the X79 can handle it ?

For most things even on X79 16gbs is plenty unless you have something that needs more memory I would stick with what you have got.

Yea you're right. My reasoning was just if I wanted to upgrade to 32GB ram I couldn't just add the same memory as I use now since they wouldn't fit under the cpu cooler - so I might as well just go all in with 32GB low profile and if the X79 can handle 1866 or 2133mhz with all 8 dimms populated and that would give a little boost then I would not mind spending the extra.

The deal breaker is essentially if the X79 chipset can do 1866/2133Mhz speeds with all 8dimms populated or if it's max 1600mhz ?

Why do you need so much RAM?

Hmm just for future use :p no I do some photoshop editing occasionally and that takes a bit of ram for the large picture files, and 32GB is relatively cheap - I can get 2 sets 16GB Corsair Vengeance LP 2133MHz memory for £179.

Dont get Vengeance on ASUS x79. Its hit and miss. Do you want capacity or perf is the question. Yes X79 can do 2133 with all dimms populated but both secondary and third timings need to be very loose.. It also depends on the strength of your IMC.

All X79 I have seen do 2400 fairly tight with only 16gb.

Well I actually want both.

Is there any particulary reason to as such as Vengeance memory isn't good for Asus P9X79 Pro ? I can't find other RAM at 2133MHz with low profile that runs at 1.5v.
Else I think the only option will be the G.skill Ares 1866mhz 1.5v ram.

I was so lucky to borrow a set of 8GB G.skill ripjaws 1866MHz cl9 just for testing out what 1866mhz cl9-10-9-24 2T would give over 1600Mhz cl8-8-8-24 1T and there was absolutely no difference...so I've decided just to go keep the ones I use now. When Ivy Bridge-E gets here then perhaps 1866mhz will give something, but for now I'll just add the $$$ to the Ivy-E saving. ;)
