I am about to purchase a UPS to obviously protect my system which is:
*Gigabyte DQ6 mobo
*ATI X1900 XT
*E6700
*4GB Geil DDR2 RAM
*3 x 74gb Raptors
*1 x 150gb Raptor
*2 x Pioneer 111dbk Optical RW's
*DELL 2407 LCD
*Belkin router ADSL
*Oh I actually have a 3.5" Floppy Drive as well! and a Hiper 580-R (oops)
I have an old Sweex thing, but frankly don't trust it!
Where I live we do get Brownouts more than Blackouts, so this figures highly in the spec. I looked at the APC CS, ES, RS and can't really tell which offer what facility - again low voltage is quite a common occurence whare I live.
Any Ideas please - no more than £140 though as I have a wife and dog!:D

Something like the APC Back-UPS RS 800VA would probably do, I have one and using it with a 480watt PSU.

What you have to watch is that if you get a lowly rated one, when it goes to shutdown your comp. via the software when it needs to, the PSU draws more power than the UPS can supply which results in your comp. simply rebooting, with no controlled shutdown occuring.

Thanks jbloggs!
I had a look on the APC site and they only quote the RS series as being foolproof for working through brownouts - I will take your advice and get the 800VA model.:)

It depends on the duration and frequency of the brown outs.

Models with AVS can correct the voltage (within reason) without switching to battery operation. Models without will just switch to battery operation if the input voltage goes too low/high.

Most are just seconds long - but can occur several times in a day, then not again for a few days/weeks! Kind of unpredictable I guess.

I live out in the country, and get voltage fluctuations quite often, the APC BACK-UPS RS 800VA does not go onto battery power with them, and the only time it goes onto battery power is when there is an actual power cut...

Some more input from others would be worthwhile....

Unless you're having display set to "eyeballs smoking in their sockets" brightness max power draw would be around 350W.

I also have an APC Smart UPS 1500i for another comp. and it certainly does weigh a "tonne"! :D
It's not the UPS itself which weights but those lead acid batteries inside it.

have an aps rs 1500 here and before i got for exact same reason as you mention frequent brownouts from living in the sticks lol works a treat :) and is allways ncie and stabel when switchiung to batterys. you cant even tell apart from the nois eof the device itself and windows alarm if you turn that on.
