I'm looking for a true UPS but I can't seem to find any. All I seem to find is SPS, Switching Power Supplies, rather than the preferable Uninterruptible Power Supplies.

Thanks

I know they don't have switching times in their specs but most describe themselves as backups which suggests and SPS - Standby Power Supply where it only functions when power is interrupted as opposed to Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) - where they continuously function, i.e always running of battery and, with no switching current. SPS's are just too risky.

I just can't tell whether they are true UPSs or SPSs.

APC's site would be good for research on these, but from memory I think the Back-UPS range (cheaper) are as you describe. The Smart-UPS range (more expensive) are true UPS.

EDIT: Apparently, that's incorrect. Both switch to battery in a matter of milliseconds, but the Smart-UPS range do more filtering and can adjust for brownouts and spikes. And Smart is Sine Wave output rather than square wave. APC do even more expensive true 'online' UPS.

I've got a Smart-UPS attached to my server at home, and it's been fine during powercuts.
