UPS query

Hi,
I am thinking of adding a UPS to my media server and another to my router and switch, with the intention of not suffering during short power outages.

The main drivers being a desire to protect the hardware from damage due to power outages (pc is already on a surge protector) due to unsafe shutdowns, and because the media server is in the loft and is a real pain to switch back on when power has returned.

But when I look at UPS for, say, £120, they seem to have good Wh (so a big battery) but can only delivery 500W output. If this is the case, how would a pc with a 650W PSU cope? One would assume it would brown out or fail anyway?

If there a way to signal to the PC to use less power when running from UPS power?

Or am I just looking a rubbish devices?

the pc's PSU as nothing to do with power draw at the wall, if the UPS can supply 500w and the media server is only pulling 90w at the wall all is good.
one would hope the media server pulling under 50w at idle, and handwear dependent i would want under 90w at load.

what are the spec's ?

Most UPS's are just in place to let you save data and shout down safely

500W is ample for your use - no way those devices should draw 500W. I have an APC BX1600MI 1600VA which protects a Synology NAS, Intel NUC running 3 VMs and my PC (AM5, 3080ti with 1000W PSU) - its gives me about 40min running time at idle

Buying a UPS to continue using your devices at full power indefinitely is going to be way too expensive. Use your UPS to protect your devices long enough for you to shut them down gracefully if needed. In a power cut, I'd shut down my PC and use my laptop for any monitoring and to shut down the NUC and VMs if needed. My Synology shuts itself down automatically after 25min if the UPS reports that power is still off.
