Hey guys,

I recently got myself a sony V3000 and attached it to my PS3.

I know most of the games are 720P, however i was under the impression tbe PS3 upscaled them to 1080P?

However whenever i play a game, the on screen dispay on the TV says 720P.

Is there a way to get the games to play in an upscaled 1080P image? I've tried unchecking the 720P box in the setup menu on the PS3, but then it seems to play them in 576P (which you can't uncheck)?

Thanks for your help

It doesn't upscale games like the 360 does. The 360 has a dedicated upscaler chip built in for games.

There are a few games out which are 1080p on PS3 though. I know GT5p and Lair are and I know there are more but unsure which they are as I always play in 720p.

Cheers for the info. I could have sworn when i I used the PS3 on a Samsung F86 about 4-5 months ago that the games were playing in 1080P (upscaled) not 720P. I must have been mistaken.

At the risk of starting a war and throwing this thread totally off topic, isn't it better to let the scaler in the TV sort out the connection and have the console put the game out in whatever connection it feels best with?
I know the 360 has a scaler, but tbh i haven't noticed any improvement in allowing that to output games in 1080p and just using the console to output in 720p and let my TV handle the rest.

it depends on the type of scaling involved, and how good the scaler is in each product. tv's generally arent the best scalers - if they were people wouldnt hold dvd scalers in such high regard. however consoles arent exactly great at scaling games either, so its just a case of which ever works best.

Especially on samsung TV's, you want the console to do the scaling. Sony and LG seem to do scaling very well though. I haven't seen other brands so I can't comment on those personally.

There is a 'PS Scaler' option in the game section on the main system settings. You can choose normal/double/full screen options as with DVD. However, this might be one of those setting enabled only through HDMI.

On my projector, the screen doesn't have to refresh and re-sync from the dashboard 1080p to the game's 720p so I guess it is a proper (albeit upscaled) 1080p signal being sent.

Having said that, I've only tried this with Burnout Paradise, and the result was somewhat artificial with pixellated jaggies - not what I'd call an improvement in sharpness.

For DVD video, upscaling can work wonders (playing DVDs through 360, I thought it was all a huge scam... until tried the same on PS3), but games are designed to be a certain resolution - I say let 'em stay that way...

Perhaps some games (as with DVDs) scale better than others... give it a try and see what you think.

The PS Scaler is for PS1 games to be upscaled to 1080p. Doesn't work for PS3 games :) I think COD4 is one of the only PS3 games that is actually upscaled to 1080p since it was made at that weird resolution, like 600p or something.

Cheers again. Must have been mistaken about the upscaling happening on the Samsung. Doesnt matter have had a very enjoyable easter hols catching up on PS2 gaming (kinda lost interest when i didnt have the HD tv.)

Maybe it upscaled to 1080i and not 1080p ??

Upscaling is only done on PS2 games but not PS3 games but you can be glad you have a Sony LCD as they have very good scalers (one of the resons I went for a 40W2000)

hmmm... all I can say is I tried the option, and it definitely came through on my projector as 1080... Mind you, 1080i is the most my projector will accept which could account for that, though I daresay 1080i might look quite decent and be a viable compromise on some TVs...

Unless...Burnout Paradise is actually a PS2 game in a PS3 case...which would explain quite a few other things also... :)
