Upscaling 4k Hdmi

Probably a stupid question, but do you need a 4k hdmi cable for upscaling on a TV to work? (1080p to 4k)
Say a regular blu ray player or a 1080p only media box?

Can't find anything on Google.

Not if the TV is doing the upscaling; which it will be if you are playing Blu-rays or media from anything that outputs 1080P. 4K capable HDMI cable would only be necessary if you get a 4K BD player.
