hi all, i have a strange question about this upscaling process you all seem to be running DVD through.

if my gfx card had Video in (component) and my ps2 outputted to component, could i connect the 2, run the upscaling utility, and output to LCD via VGA in upscaled progressive scan with slightly enhanced picture?

as i understand a lot of PS2 gamesz are 560i or whatever it is, not progressive, and thus suck on an LCD TV... can it be upscaled/processed by my pc and come out looking more like ps2.5?

I dont think any ps2 game would be understood by the software most use to upscale on their pc - this software I think has to know what you are inputting first and I doubt there would be any relevant software available

apart from that your pc would have to be very powerful, especially the graphics card as it would be doing two or three jobs at once - 3d image of the game, as well as running the upscalling software - i think the latter requires a pretty decent pc on its own

You can just connect the console to the pc, via a tv card or vivo gfx card and just connect the pc to the tv, the gfx card automatically upscales everything to whatever res its set to. Or you can use ffdshow to process it as well. Some ps2 games are already in progressive scan or 1080i.

You dont need a powerfull pc at all, my athlon old 2600 can manage it.

without ffdshow you wouldnt actually be upscaling tho, would you? It would be like watchng a dvd on a massive screen without a line doubler etc it would cover the whole screen, but with a horribly noisy picture.

I havent used ffdshow so I dont know but I am surprised that it would have a ps2 program like it does an mp4, avi etc etc

It doesnt need a ps2 program, a ps2 signal is just uncompressed video at 640x576, 720x576 or 1920x1080.

Ok fair enough - I thought there would have to be, otherwise there would be a time lag evident - ie the ps2 thinks the game is further on than the screen is showing

Appologies to OP looks like I was completely wrong

There usually is a small timelag, because as you said the ps2 is ahead of the video because of the processing slowing down video output, its pretty much impossible to avoid whatever pc you have. Wether you notice it or not though it down to you, and wether it affects gameplay or not.

so what software would be needed to upscale an input signal from sky through htpc through to lcd tv?

(Sorry for hijacking thread)

The graphics card automatically upscales the signal. With sky though you wont get a watchable picture through composite or s-video.

It upscales video to whatever your desktop resolution is set to. FFD show allows you to select a res to upscale the video to though.
