quick question since sorter on the subject, i got 32" hdtv with vga cable for my 360 how to i get rid of the 2 1 1/2 inch black bars above and and below the picture when playing dvd?
You can't as the aspect ratio of the movie is wider then your television. To have no borders, your TV needs to be 21:9 opposed to your 16:9.

seems to be on all dvds so no way of vchanging

Very few DVD's (apart from TV shows) are in 16:9 so there will be some black borders.

Most films will be 1:85 or 2:35 (normally says on the DVD case) both of these would create borders when watching on a widescreen (16:9) TV. One would just have bigger borders (2:35).

As smokedog mentions, you can't as the aspect ratios are different. However, you can 'zoom' in using the xbox 360 dvd playback, effectively lopping off the sides of the picture and stretching the rest to fit your 16:9 display

But yes, your screen is upscaling/downscaling your source rp.. how is your macmini connected to the LCD.. DVI? its probably just the connection that your seeing a better picture from and that your TV is still doing the upscaling just with a better quality source.

The 360 is on Component and the macmini is on VGA. But for all I know the macmini is upscaling, whcih is why it has a better picture, whereas on the 360 the TV is doing the scaling. I don't have a VGA cable for my 360 to do a proper test.

The TV is Sharp Aquos LC-26GA6E

I am guessing the peoplewho use the as a DVD player are using VGA, hence they can upscale and get a better picture. Even when I had a different LCD TV I found the PC's DVD player much better than the 360.

Well if you are setting the MacMini to output at your screens resolution 1360x720? then the Mac is upscaling the source for the TV so it will look better.. as far as i understand.. i could be totally wrong but this is the most logical idea to me.

Yes, the macmini is set to 1360*768 (The screen is actually 1366*768 so it is not perfect 1:1 pixel mapping). Might borrow my mates vga cable and see what dvds look like on the 360 with it doing the upscaling rather than my tv. Will still keep using the macmini to play DVDs though, as it can play many other media types and it also has a neat media center like app (Front Row) built in that you control with a tiny IR remote. Anyway, I digress....

Your screen may support 1:1 pixel mapping though.. my LCD is 1366x768 and all it does is have 3 black pixels width on each side for the image.. you cant tell the black lines are there and it doesnt stretch the image.
