UPVC door locks from inside but not outside

Ever since we moved into our current house two years ago, we've been unable to leave by the back door since it only locks from the inside.

The key won't even go in and the pin doesn't budge.

Knowing almost nothing about locks, is this by design or is my lock faulty?

From the inside, it locks just fine. You lift the handle up to engage the bolts and the key goes in and turns perfectly smoothly.

From the outside, I can see what appears to be a brass pin, but it's stuck and won't move no matter what. I tried depressing the pin with a narrow screwdriver and it won't budge. I've put wd40 and 3 in 1 in there, no change.

So is this by design?

Thanks.

I doubt it's designed to prevent locking from the outside, especially if a keyhole is presented. Is it a euro cylinder lock? If so, they're very easy to change. I did the whole house in about 20 minutes.

Don't get the cheapest Yale, go for an anti snap model. I went for Avocet ABS and highly recommend them.

Is it a euro cylinder lock?

I think so.

Just had another go, the pin (if it is that) isn't budging. Sounds like a new lock then.

Cheers.

yes its a euro lock easy to replace check out youtube for videos.

the Avocet ABS locks are the best out there replaced all the locks on my new build house when i moved in 2 years ago with them.

Thanks.

Just watched a youtube vid and it seems very easy...except my retaining screw head is all kinds of messed up. Perfect. Nothing Diy is ever simple for me it seems!

ohh that is nicely messed up, wonder had someone the issue with the lock and decided to ring the screw then they tried to replace it.
Small chisel? make a flat headed notch?

I had to drill my nans retaining lock.

Maybe an impact screwdriver?

Or if its not an antisnap lock do the snap trick as the weakest point would most likely be where the screw goes in.

Get a set of reverse screw extractors to remove the messed up screw then replace lock and screw with new ones :)

Someone went at that with a drill. Set to hammer mode! Also the plastic looks like a screw driver has been used to jimmy the door open.

Sounds like someone tried to unlock it when there was a key in the other side, maybe. I've done that before. Just need to put a key in either side and jiggle them both around until they're lined up again.

*This may be entirely wrong; thinking about it, if that happens then you generally can't get either key out until you sort it.

Update: got some Rolson Screw Extractors for £2.40 from Amazon and they turned up today.

I drilled a small hole with a drill bit designed for metal, then set to work with the drill set to very slow anticlockwise:

Success!

The lock is now out and I've ordered a replacement.

I marked the lock where it met the door before I removed it, so I could be sure to order the right sized replacement.

Thanks for all the help in this thread.
