Urgent advice before I commit and send my money.

Also with UW you have to deal with super annoying letterboxing everytime you watch youtube or similar. I couldn't tolerate that.

It’s not madness at all, most ultrawide gamers share this view and it’s why many go for this format.

But if you get a 16:9 monitor thats as wide as the "ultrawide". Change the FOV to match the width of the UW. Then you get the same exact view PLUS more view top and bottom!

You can change the fov on an uktrawide as well. The 21.9 will always show more than the 16.9 at the same fov. Plus I don't like messing with the stock fov on most games as it's fine at default and even if I did I would still be seeing more with the 21.9.

19:9 fills your vision better than 21:9 that's all there is to it.

Most people are "sold" on Ultrawide because they went from a "x" cm tall monitor to an ultrawide that is the same "x"cm tall. So they swear by them, of course they do. They got a bigger monitor (wider) than they previously had and got more game on the screen. Yay!

But if you objectively compare 16:9 to 21:9 of the same width. The 16:9 is far more immersive and a better shape for our eyes.

Lmfao, your talking absolute nonsense. I have a 65" & 75" display in my home and I have my gaming pc connected up to the ultrawide as I prefer the format. I actually moved from the 65" which at the time was in my lounge to the ultrawide.

If you have a gsync screen go nvidia, if you have a freesync screen then AMD.
There is not much difference between a 2070s, 5700xt and a 2080.

Not the case, his FreeSync screen, could be GSync compatible.

Ive got a FreeSync screen, which im now using with a 2070 Super (previous card was a LC 64), and its GSync compatible, and works flawlessly :)

EDIT:

As was said above, id take the 2070 Super, its faster than the Radeon 7, and just as fast as the 2080 Super, which costs a lot more money.

Only cards to get, are the 2070 Super, or the 2080 Ti, as the 2080s, are just not worth it now, when the 2070 Super is much cheaper, and just as fast.

The MSI Gaming X would probably be my first choice for the red team (Sapphire Nitro/Powercolor Red Devil are also excellent). As said, the 2070s is pretty close to a 2080s, so unless you somehow get very lucky on pricing just get the 2070s instead.

I find 16:9 plenty wide. I already need to move my eyeballs a lot as it is on that. I say bring back 16:10! :p

As for OP, just get a 5700 XT for £350 and sell that on in a years time and add more on top and upgrade then. Will work out much cheaper and you will end up with a lot more performance.

Will I miss Freesync?

Although saying this im stuck at Freesync 1 and the monitor isn't the best (UE590) so may be an upgrade on the cards at some point.

Im watching benchmarking with the 5700XT and its suprising me to be honest. And it definitely fits my brief re the looks.

So I suppose its now 2080S vs Saving a bit, and keeping freesync with the 5700XT

Yes you will miss Freesync. By how much turn off the Freesync now on your RX480 and see for yourself.

Keep your money and buy a £400 5700XT today. When AMD comes out with better GPU in few months you can always sell it and buy something better.
Spending right now £800 on 1 year old tech (Nvidia Turing) which is to be replaced in just 6 months is madness.

Also if you do not get the perf to 60fps with the 5700XT, you can use GPU Scaling toggle set your ingame resolution to 3200x1800 and activate RIS on DX12/9/Vulkan games.

Worth to look on youtube what I am talking about.

Otherwise spend the extra money and buy a better monitor.

The fact that you've said "casual" gaming and "mild" content creation says to me you're wasting money if you're prepared to drop £700 on a GPU. 5700 XT or a sub-£500 2070 Super and you're flying.

What you are really after is the predicted big Navi product which isn't available yet and could easily be 6months away. So if you need something soon then imho go for the 5700XT (ideally with a warranty you can pass on) and sell it when big Navi is here.

Anything above a 2070S in the Nvidia line is such poor value for money you either need to not care about value or have some compelling reason even if u can afford it. Your £800 in theory will buy you a lot more performance next year and I'd be surprised if the 3000 series will be another sandbag generation.

agree with last two comments.
And while you're waiting, think about retiring the Phenom. Mild or casual, you will notice improvement from going Ryzen 3k
