Hi all,

I will really appreciate your advise on my present situation.

I relocated to Portsmouth, United Kingdom around November 2016 to meet my family from Nigeria.

Prior to my relocation, I have always work as a Clerical/Administrative Officer for the past few years but I was told when I started searching for work by many Agencies that I can never secure an office job even as an Office Assistance in the UK as I have never had office experience in the UK and most office assistance jobs I applied for never got back to me. My wife also advise me to search for job which does not require experience like production operative, etc.

I got a Warehouse Operative job through an Agency in Estee Lauder, Fareham (The Agency provided bus to and from house throughout the period of the contract) from 25th November 2016 and the work has ended on the 6th January as it was a Temporary/Seasonal Job.
I started applying for another Warehouse Operative and production operative jobs since the last week of December 2016 but I was turned down several times due to the distance and that I do not have a licence or car yet and there seems to be very few Warehouse Operative jobs around Portsmouth as I have searched endlessly online and also gone to more than 10 Job Agencies in Portsmouth but usually tell me I need to be able to drive as Warehouse Operative or Production operative jobs they have are in far Fareham, Southampton, Eastleigh, etc.

I have however bought Theory driving test CD, sat for theory test and passed; and currently doing driving lesson with the hope of passing my test soon.
I will however like advise on what kind of jobs I can search for that requires less experience for now until I will be able to pass my practical driving test as I am tired of sitting at home and doing nothing. And if there is any career path I can choose that is lucrative.

I read somewhere about Facility Management assistance jobs which requires just minor work like changing bulb, etc but could not find one of such job online around Portsmouth.

I have plan of furthering my education in the UK soon, maybe through top-up Degree but just need a job to get going, provide for my family (wife and kid) and be able to save for my education as well.

Your wide experience advise are welcome on what I can do as a new immigrant to the UK.

Looked in here?

Put in the postcode and see what is around you.

In terms of clerical work, as you've found out you are either competing against experienced people or likely young people with UK degrees.

I can't help as I don't know the area, but good luck. You seem to have the right attitude to it all and that counts for a lot.

Thanks for the link, I have registered on the site and will be constantly checking.

Thanks for your input. I appreciate it.

A good thread you suggested but I had registered for most of the online job sites suggested.

Really appreciate your kind gesture.

Google for local recruitment agencies in your area, go in and speak to them face to face. Online you're a name, easily forgotten, if you go in it's a human interaction and a face, you are much more likely to get help then.

If you are unemployed then take any job you can get, and keep looking for a better one.

Supermarket, retail, anything, to get the experience.

A quick google suggests there are a few call centre jobs in the area paying £19k+ a year / £10+ per hour, worth a look.

While the odds are going to be against you - if you are generally a people person and/or outgoing/confident then its worth searching for businesses in the area that will have the kind of office work you are used to and going in person with a CV - companies tend to like people who are pro-active and you might find some are hiring, even if its just a foot in the door rather than the job you want, but haven't got around to doing much about it yet.

Unfortunately its not a good time for retail type work as most places will be bleeding off temporary staff from the seasonal period still and generally won't be looking for new hires but in the long run if all else fails that is probably your best option for finding non-specialised work and some like Argos if you are half switched on you can probably move into a hybrid admin support/customer service type role which would give you some UK based office type experience to build on into other jobs.

I work in FM currently, I'd have a look on http://www.fm-world.co.uk/. Will give abit of guidance with where to go given your level of experience and potential avenues with more time in the field.

Facilities Assistant jobs generally surround handling building management/operations and typically a good place to start with learning the basics of what's required run keep a site up and running.

As you advance, employers start to look for things like IOSH/NEBOSH etc
