Hi all,

I wonder if you can help.

Im trying to sort out a friends internet connection. They hav AOL broadband and a Belkin 802.11g Wireless Modem Router (F5d7632uk4).

The modem is syncing with the adsl line and is reporting that the internet connection has connected, but I cannot view any web sites. When I go in to the belkin software and run a test on the connection, it is passing the initial tests (PPPoe etc) and the IP ping, but it is failing on DNS.

Im assuming that the DNS server is not being correctly picked up by the router (it is currently set to automatic detection within the belkin router software). Does anyone know the AOL DNS server ip address? Or is there something else which could be causing this?

Ive got the router set to an MTU of 1400 which I believe is correct, and the network connection on the pc is set to obtain the ip address and default gateway automatically. This is connected via a network cable btw, not wireless.

Any help will be greatly appreciated as the AOL helpdesk quite frankly suck!

thanks

sorry yeah my mistake, typo :(

Just to update.... I can connect to these forums using the IP address, but if i type in the url I get page cannot be displayed. Am I correct in thinking this means the DNS servers are not being picked up?

Sounds about right. Should be an option to manually specify the DNS servers, though no idea what they are.
Try connecting with a USB modem (or a router that'll get DNS server IPs from PPTP), and write them down.

Hi,

Dont know its any use to you but im on AOL with a Netgear router, cut 'n' paste from my router status page is as follows:

ADSL Port
MAC Address *0:*f:*5:c*:*a:6*
IP Address 172.216.2**.5*
Network Type PPPoA
IP Subnet Mask 255.255.255.255
Gateway IP Address 8*.*45.*42.*
Domain Name Server 205.188.146.145

Ive edited the above to remove some stuff im not too sure its wise to post on't tinterweb.

HTH,

Dave.

Paul been a long time (bought some stuff off you along time back and beat ya at the lan in wyc he he!!)

two problems with that setup ;)

1 : AOL
2 : Belkin!!

lol, sorry not really much help, but yes its a dns problem, if you plug the original modem (not the belkin, i am guessing aol ship a modem of sorts) into a pc, then do an ipconfig /all it should give you the dns settings an so forth.

then reconnect the router and configure it as required, hope that helps.
