urgent assitance please

Gave my parent the 350d and showed them how to use it full auto, they are now in egypt have taken lots of photos and now its playing up. Its in full auto and they are trying to take pictures its nearly dusk in egypt.

The camera is in full auto and they have changed the battey. My dad is sayin when they try take a photo its just showing a white light on the front and then wont take the photo so they stop trying and it then takes it by itself about 30 seconds later.

Any ideas whats going on. 350d full auto kit lens, plenty memory left and fully charged battery.
please help i really dont want to be the one who ruined their holiday

Is it as simple as in full auto and a low light setting it has a shutter speed of 30 secs? Pop the flash change to "P" mode and choose a shutter speed of 1/60 and see what happens.

Think the 350d has a max timer of 10 secs.

It does, but is this a timed 30 seconds? Or just exagerating the problem? Sounds like they've put it into self timer to me.

They've just changed the shooting mode. You can be in full auto and in single, burst, or timer. The bottom of the two buttons to the right of the smaller screen does this. Press it and look at the small screen. It'll switch between the images shown on the button they're pressing. The single rectangle is the one they want.

sounds like its been stuck in manual mode to me.

If it's in auto the flash would pop up, so it either can't be in auto or they have turned the flash off somehow because it sounds like it's exposing for the ambient light ie, a reeeaaallly long exposure in the dark, (or it's on timer mode)
