Just rebuillt my PC with a new mobo / cpu / ram.

But the issue is that ive rebuilt everything back together and when i turn the PC on i dont get any display output on my monitor and my Grpahics card Fan make a kind of stop stop start sound every 3 seconds. I have rechecked all the power cables etc and as far as i can tell everything is as it should be.

Mobo = Gigabyte - GA-MA770-UD3
CPU = AMD Phenom II X2 550
Mem = OCZ Gold Edition 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 PC2-8500C5 Dual Channel
GPU = Saphire ATI Radeon 3870 512MB
PSU = Hiper 580W

Now im sure its not a PSU problem as this same PSU has powered my old Athlon 4200+ 939 Chip + all the current peripherals + a SLI 7900GS at one time with no problems.

Any Suggestions ?

Its the only PSU worth talking about that i have. So im unable to do that. Its been fine before and its not made an spectacular sounds or displays of blowing up or anything LOL .. it Seems fine. all the lights on the PC come on and the drives power up and fans all go on the CPU etc.

The one on the GPU is going around but its doing this stop stop start thing ... not completly stop though, more of a slow slow continue type of thing if that makes any sense.

Fair enuf.

Do you have another graphics card you can swap into the machine to see if the 3870 is dying?

Failing that, try putting the RAM in one stick at a time/ different slots (and if possible try some compatible, working DDR2 RAM from somewhere else). If it boots in some configuration then it is likely a RAM problem.

Yeh i had already tried the stick of ram in various dimms also etc with no joy. I think this is going to have to sit there broke for now :( damn PC's I will have to wait until i can get my spare GPU from work and try that.

If you take the graphics card out and try and boot it then, does it still restart every 3 secs? I know you wont be able to see anything on the screen but if it doesn't restart every 3secs may well be a good indication that the GPU is deaded

This is not a guaranteed solution, but that particular model of PSU has a reputation of failing (sometimes spectacularly)

If possible, you may want to borrow another working PSU and try it on your rig to see if it is a bust PSU (if it is, I hope it didn't take any other components with it).

Youve got me worried now, my bros been running one of those for a year :(

I wouldnt worry ive been running it for like 2 years now maybe more infact. Its been solid for me and im convinced its not the problem. Im gonna play a bit more with it before i give up for tonight LOL.

Okay a few more things to add.

plugged my PSU back in to my old mobo (which i was using it with yesterday) and put the Graphics Card in to it with a Hard Drive also plugged in. And bobs your uncle it booted up fine everything running happily and the Graphics Card fan was no longer doing this slow slow back to normal Fan speed thing as it was doing in my new motherboard.

So i replicated the exact same setup of PSU / Hard Drives plugged in and Graphics card on the new Motherboard and again the CPU Fan is spiining fine with no issue but the Graphics card is back to its slow slow normal (repeating every 2/3 seconds) again with no display output.

So somewhere along the line the Grpahics card either doesnt like being in this motherboard or this motherboard has an error on it. I only wish i had a damn spare Graphics card to finaly eliminate where the error is.

This has to be the most problematic upgrade ive ever done :(

Take everything out of the case and build it on a bit of cardboard on the floor with the absolute minimum you need, double check all power cables required are plugged in, have you checked to make sure the board is mounted on the brass risers and/or uses cardboard or other non conductive washers etc?

+1

what he said!

Okay another update and advise needed really.

I have got 3 spare graphics cards and some spare ram now from another machine which was working fine.

I have removed everything out of the case as advised above and only got the essentials plaugged in. I have tried with the new ram that was purchased with the motherboard and also with the spare ram i aquired from another machine. Ive also tried with the spare graphics cards and every time the same thing happens.

This being that everything powers up as you would expect by looking and listening to the devices, CPU fan is spinning, Graphics card i spinning, Hard Drives will boot up when plugged in. But not with any configuration does an output from any of the graphics card appear on the monitor. Short of now trying another monitor (although im guessing this is pointless as with my old setup the monitor powers up fine)

Do i now assume the Motherboard is screwed in some way and RMA it. And if i was to do this would it be with OCUK themselves ? ive never had to RMA anything before so bit new to how that all works.

Thanks.

It is rare to have a brand new motherboard that is faulty, so that kinda makes me think: is the motherboard really faulty?

Now with what you said about all these component working with the other motherboard, things start to get more complicated, cause this suggests a faulty motherboard.

PS: You did take the new motherboard out of the case and built it on cardboard, right?

yep i did that also.

Obviosuly the only other item i can't check is the CPU, because the CPU being a Phenom II i dont have another motherboard i could source to test it.

I know exactly what you mean by finding it hard to believe the motherboard might be faulty but at this point i dont know what else i can try.

Cheers for all the help guys, after re-seating the CPU for the umpteenth time out of last gasp desperation its all started working. No idea why though as it seemed to be in properly from the previous efforts. Right now im just glad its all working.
