Sorry to be a pain folks, but I've got a family friend's computer here, and she wanted it reformatted.

Its going from a FAT32 system to a NTFS, from a chinese windows XP Pro OS to an English XP Pro.

No matter which way I try to install the OS, I get an error.
1) If I boot off the XP CD, I get a BSOD before I get to the partition screen
2) If I boot in windows, I get an error message (can't remember what), although it is further in the installation.

I have used Hiren's boot cd and have deleted the partitions manually, and I am now performing a HDD test. I will then format the HDD using Hirens CD.

What could cause a problem like this? I can no longer use the old OS as it's gone, and I can't install the new OS due to this error.

I have also resetted the CMOS to no avail

Memtest found no errors with the memory

The BSOD error is SESSION3_INITIALIZATION_FAILED

Will try a different cd/dvd drive tomorrow hopefully

Problem solved!!!

After replacing the dvd drive, it still didn't work. Turned out the replacement was faulty too.

Tried an old cd-rw drive, and now XP loads just fine!
