My computer (in my sig) has just gone pop.

I was gaming when the system restarted, only it didn't. When I switch it on now, nearly all (see below) the fans spin but there are no beeps, no output to the screens, no nuffink. I've done the usual; swapped the graphics, unplugged everything bar 1 stick of ram, tried different slots etc., but I'm guessing it's a MB or processor problem. I think probably the latter as when I power on now the CPU fan doesn't spin without a prod from a finger :(.

Now normally I'd be rubbing my hands at the prospect of a new build. I'd be on these forums for days researching components and seeking advice. But nowadays I work away from home a lot whereas the wife works from home and urgently needs the computer back up and running.

So (eventually ) to the point. Can you clever chaps spec me and new rig? The budgets £300-£350 with a bit of flex. Is there anything worth salvaging (ram etc.) or is that just going to cause a bottle neck?

I was looking at some of the bundles which looked good value but I'm so out of touch I'm not sure where to begin (I've no allegiance to AMD or Intel). I'm aware new processors may be out this month which may see prices drop but unfortunately time is of the essence.

Finally if I was to re-use bits and the spec came in under budget I might consider spending a bit to get a SSD for the OS.

Your thoughts eagerly awaited.

cheers ss.

p.s. Forgot to mention it will be used for music editing (heavy), gaming (medium), wife's work (who cares). Only mild overclocking and I like things quiet these days (must be getting old).

You could just replace the MB. An AM3+ board would be a good idea for future CPU upgrades. Its probably best just to go for high end phenom ii's though at the moment (Zosma/Thuban).

Very much sounds like a duff motherboard mate. I would try picking up a cheap second hand AM3 motherboard. As above are there any motherboard bleep error codes or LEDs lit up? Is the board in warranty at all? The fact that fans spin up suggest that the PSU is OK and the likelyhood of a CPU dying is quite rare.

bro, have you tried a dif psu? often certain rials blow, after my mates pc went pop then he couldnt boot
tested the psu and 3.3v was find
5v was measuring 7v lol and 12v was down at 2v so it was a psu issue, and may well be the same for you, Good luck, Zac

You back, thought you'd been permabanned?!:p

Right, thanks for all the advice.

Tested the power supply and that was fine, so I've ordered new goodies (splashed a bit on I5 OC bundle) which will be arriving in a day or two.

Also ordered a SSD (Crucial m4 128Gb), which leads me onto....

Most of my data is stored on a NAS so the new build will be pretty painless, but there are some apps/data which I want to recover from the existing HD before I install the OS on the SSD.

What will happen if I boot to the old drive with a new MB/processor/ram?
Is it just a case of installing new MB drivers or am I better off just making the drive a secondary and recovering the data then?

thanks.
